When Black Friday begins, consumers head out early to the likes of Walmart, Target, Costco, Best Buy, and others. They don’t traditionally say, “Hey honey, after dinner, I’m going out to buy that leaf blower at Home Depot.” Some people will shop at The Home Depot, Inc. (HD) to buy Christmas gifts, but only if their significant other is into home improvement. Despite not being known as a Black Friday retail destination, Home Depot’s busiest week of the year is the week including Black Friday. Part of this has to do with Christmas trees. Most people don’t know this, but Home Depot is the largest seller of live Christmas trees. According to the National Retail Federation, consumers plan on spending an average of $54.75 on Christmas trees and related accessories this year, which would be an increase over the average of $53.88 last year. (See also, Home Depot's Results Continue to Impress) However, this goes well beyond Christmas trees. Home Depot has increased its holiday seasonal merchandise fivefold over the past decade and now offers 1,000 seasonal items.

In order to drive more consumers to its stores, Home Depot Black Friday deals include: Up to 40% off major appliance special buys Up to 20% off overstock Up to 30% off lighting You can also buy online and pick up at the store. If you shop Home Depot online, you will find 4,000 seasonal items. For the holiday season, Home Depot expects comps sales to increase 3%, which missed the analyst expectations of 4%. Looking at the bigger picture, the real estate and home improvement markets remain strong. As long as rates remain low, real estate should at least hold its own, which is good news for Home Depot. As far as Black Friday goes, Home Depot keeps offering more merchandise annually, which appears to be successful. Since Home Depot’s merchandise is unique to other retailers (excluding Lowe’s), it’s more about the status of mortgage rates than stealing market share from the likes of Walmart, Target, Costco, and Best Buy. For the most part, it’s apples and oranges.
