We provide short-term loans of wheelchairs. We also provide commodes in some areas. Will it cost me anything? We request donations to help us provide the service. The service is run by our volunteers. A refundable deposit may also be required for some items. I live in London. Why can't I find this service in my area? Wheelchairs and commodes are supplied by local British Red Cross offices in most places apart from London. Our office for Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex is the closest to London that supplies wheelchairs and mobility aids. Contact the Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex office with your request. Each enquiry will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee delivery of the service in London. Where can I find more information about mobility aids? A Number of private hire firms make daily, weekly or monthly hire charges and may vary in amount. Before hiring equipment you need to make sure the item you require is not available to you from the Local Authority. If you have mobility problems you should discuss this with your doctor. He can refer you for a wheelchair assessment. The wheelchairs are provided free of charge from the NHS and remain with you until you no longer require them. If you have short term mobility problems you may be able to loan a wheelchair from the "Home Loans Service". You cannot contact them direct but your Health Visitor or District Nurse can contact them for you. They can also request short term loans of small appliances e.g. bath seats, toilet seats, mattresses etc. On discharge from hospital the social worker can arrange for you to get equipment that you need when you return home.
