By comparison the average public toilet seat has just eight per square centimetre. The bacteria found included E-coli. Staph aureus and enterococcus faecalis which can cause upset stomachs - a serious illness for young children.

Are you sitting comfortably: It's hard enough to find suitable restaurants to take baby to, but now you may have to think twice about putting them in the high chair. Research has found they harbour more bacteria than the average public toilet seat Parents are now being warned to ensure that the high chairs are cleaned before use because of the risk that their child could become ill as a result of the germs lucking there. Dr Nicholas Moon director of technical affairs at Microban, makers of antibacterial products, which conducted the research across a variety of restaurants, said: 'The test results varied considerably and while some of the high chairs were relatively clean, others had concentrations of bacteria as high as 1,200 bacteria per square centimetre, which is worrying. 'This is of concern because a child’s immune system tends to be far less robust than an adult's and children tend to touch things and put their hands in their mouth a lot – so they easily infect themselves with any germs they encounter.

'Small children are, of course, often messy with food and as a consequence much of it goes on tables and chairs. 'However, as many parents will vouch, it is far from unusual to be presented with a high chair for use that is covered in smears and other food stains from earlier use. 'Sometimes these stains may have been there for days – and that is just the visible evidence of a lack of attention to cleanliness. 'However the report found high levels of bacteria even on high chairs that looked clean to the visible eye - indicating that even when staff clear obvious spillages they are not using antibacterial spray cleaners to ensure that the chair is thoroughly cleaned before the next child sits down.'This lack of attention could easily lead to cross-contamination or more serious illnesses. Making a mess: Children are messy so parents must ensure that high chairs are cleaned thoroughly before use 'While this research was conducted in the USA I would suspect that the high chairs in restaurants in this country would if anything be even dirtier as we tend to be less thorough about our hygiene than the Americans.'Restaurants are now being urged to improve their standards of cleanliness.
