Passionate about design, Richard trained as a furniture designer at Trent Polytechnic. After graduating Richard gained valuable experience working as a space planner with Voko, a German office furniture manufacturer.
But it was when he moved to award-winning market leader Herman Miller that he developed a commercial awareness of design and discovered that his real skill is in understanding needs and delivering solutions. He worked with many large companies going through huge change, such as The AA, Barclays Bank and British airways, helping them understand the potential of their working environments and delivering creative and effective interiors. Richard’s success led to him representing Herman Miller in the Middle East to train and develop local dealers throughout the region in both product knowledge and customer care skills. He was also the interface between the blue chip clients and the manufacturing facility in the US, where he went through a steep learning curve in dealing with complex customers. Among the many projects that he oversaw during his two years in the Middle East was the delivery of the two regional headquarters of UAE telecommunications and technology giant Etisalat: a 23-floor tower in Dubai followed by a 26-floor skyscraper in Abu Dhabi.
As well as winning and delivering projects, Richard also developed the Herman Miller distribution network into Kuwait On his return to Europe, Richard joined office furniture dealer Furniture For Business, initially within A&D, before heading the Introducer Sales Team and then becoming Sales Director. Working closely with industry professionals he delivered a range of successful projects across the South East. Notable among these was a £2.3million installation for international investment experts INVESCO in Finsbury Square. As one of the first open book projects within the office furniture industry, it helped reposition office furniture experts from sales people to consultants assisting the client to find and deliver the best solution. In early 2008, Richard – along with Helen and Dwyn –set out to combine their market experience with the desire to provide the highest level of customer service in the furniture Industry. Six years on, and Collaborate has expanded to become a respected office furniture consultancy with a comprehensive range of services.
