Camp and HikeCamp Furniture Alphabetical: A to Z

Whether your favorite seated position while camping is cooking over a fire or reclining with toes stretched out across the earth as you tell stories, your camping chair is where you spend a lot of downtime just plain relaxing. A comfortable chair is key to a happy camping experience - and if it's multi-functional, easy to pack and a cinch to assemble, even better. For these reasons, the Helinox Ground Chair has earned a permanent spot in my camping kit. Speaking of baggage, I like to get out and go camping with as little of it as possible. I nix bulky, heavy items, including most fold-up chairs. Sometimes being a few inches off the ground feels good though, particularly on a recent trip where the turf was a crowded swell of anthills.

Helinox Ground Chair to the rescue: a souped-up, highly-engineered combo of the old classic beach chair and the minimalist lovers' tripod stool. While it's not a bells-and-whistles chair, and doesn't boast a sunshade, footrest or multiple beer can holders, the amount of ergonomic comfort provided in this 1.1 pound seat - which collapses into a football-sized stuff sack - is astounding. You'll hardly know it's there, until you need it. I'm not sure I'd have space for it when backpacking, but it's ideal for car and motorcycle camping. The first thing I noticed when I unpacked the Helinox Ground Chair was its streamlined design, which comes in two components: a nylon mesh sheath and feather-light shock-corded alloy poles (plus, the stuff sack). The materials felt surprisingly sturdy, considering how light the package is. With a glance at the instructional image, I got the leg poles locked into place in about 30 seconds. I bet I could do it in the dark. The Helinox Ground Chair delivers a level of comfort that is beyond its simple look.

Upon taking my first seat and reclining into the back-hugging nylon, it was clear why this chair has won the 2014 Red Dot Design Award and 2014/15 ISPO product award. The way the fabric envelopes my arms slightly is just as good as an armrest. I like that the nylon scoops perfectly below the back shoulder for slinging an elbow over and turning to comfortably face someone behind you. Perhaps my favorite proof of expert design is the chair's even weight distribution that guards against the common camping faux pas of rocking back in a camping chair and falling flat on one's back. The nylon is breathable, tear-resistant, fine in extreme weather, easy to clean, and looks and feels like it will last a long time. Here's one possible limitation: campers who already own a supply of tall, full-size camping chairs may find the Helinox Ground Chair an odd match, as it positions its occupant slightly closer to the ground. In the tent, nightime readers will love that the chair can be flipped upside down and backwards and set upon a sleeping bag to become a backrest/ headrest.
