The Danish supplier of rattan furniture, Sika-Design, has added a new member to its Icons product family of classic rattan furniture. This is the iconic Hanging Egg Chair, originally designed by the designer couple Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel in 1959. The chair is known all over the world, partly because of its sculptural form and partly because of the original suspension in a strong iron chain. The chair has for years been manufactured by an Italian manufacturer, but now again it has come into Danish hands. This is a pleasure to the designer couple’s daughter, Dennie Ditzel, who today manage the parents’ design rights: “I’m really glad that my parents’ design has come home to Denmark. I have no doubt that Sika-Design will treat this special design with the proper respect, and they have the production know-how needed to make our design in the right quality,” she says. Hanging Egg Chair is relaunched by Sika-Design in several international furniture fairs during the 1st quarter of 2014.

One doesn’t want to go on about their gender, but it’s impossible not to want to, because one wants to give these groundbreaking female designers as much recognition as possible – 20th C design was a world women had to fight hard to win recognition in. In Ditzel’s case, at least, her work was and remains moderately well-known, and over her long career she did win major international awards and acclaim and her work for Georg Jensen has brought her additional attention.
