Update your dining room chairs with a full-skirted slipcover in fabric that enhances your design scheme. Mix and match patterns and colors or make seasonal covers that celebrate holidays and special family occasions.
A slipcover preserves the integrity of a dining room chair, does not alter the upholstery or wood in any way and can change the look of the chair to suit a newly decorated room. Measure all the way around the chair back. Divide the measurement in half and add 1 1/2 inches for the cut width of the cover back pieces. Measure from the top of the back of the chair to the top of the seat and add 1 1/2 inches for the cut length of the cover back pieces. Cut two pieces of fabric to these measurements. Measure the width and length of the seat and add 1 1/2 inches. Cut one piece of fabric to the measurements. The width is the measurement from the left to the right, the length is the measurement from the back to the front. Measure from the top of the chair seat to the floor and add 3 inches for the cut length of the skirt fabric. Add twice the width and twice the length of the chair seat for the width of the skirt fabric section. Cut a piece of fabric to these measurements, joining widths of fabric as necessary.
Align the length edges of the skirt, right sides together and sew with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the bottom edge up 1/2 inch toward the wrong side and press, turn the hem an additional 2 inches and press. Sew close to the first fold to secure the bottom hem. Sew around the top edge of the skirt, 3/4 inch from the raw edge with a long stitch of six to eight stitches per inch. It is helpful to change the top or needle thread to a color that contrasts with the bobbin thread. Back-stitch several times at the start of the sewing but do not backstitch at the end and leave 8 inches of thread after the end of the stitching. Sew around the top edge, again, 1/4 inch from the raw edges. Back-stitch at the start to lock the stitches and leave 8 inches of thread free at the end. These two rows of stitching are the gathering threads. Place four pins spaced equally along the top edge of the skirt. Align each corner of the chair seat cover to one pin, right sides of the chair seat and skirt together.
Identify the two long needle threads of the basting sewing on the right wrong side of the skirt and gently pull on them, gathering the fabric. Adjust the gathers and continue pulling the threads until the skirt fabric is gathered equally between the pins. Sew around the perimeter of the seat fabric with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the line of basting thread sewn at 3/4-inch. Sew the front and back sections together along the side and top seams. Align the bottom edge of one side of the chair back cover with one width edge of the chair seat, right sides together. The chair back section will be wider than the seat by half the circumference of the chair back. Leave this section free. Center the seat section on the chair back section, raw edges together, allowing half the excess free at each end of the chair seat. Sew the seat and back together along the previous stitching line of the seat. Turn the remaining bottom edge of the chair back sections under 1/2 inch and stitch in place Slip the cover over the chair back to complete the project.
