E very war involves violent sexual assaults. Throughout history, armies committed sexual atrocities on the civilian population. World War II was no exception.
The German forces inflicted a massive amount of sexual violence on women. Rape, forced prostitution, and sexual harassment were rampant and systematic.
The German generals realized they would never prevent their soldiers from having sex. Instead of trying to stop sexual activities, they decided to control them. So, the German army established a vast network of military brothels throughout the occupied territories.
The Germans operated over 500 military brothels during World War II. For example, Paris had nineteen brothels in the inner city alone. Over the course of the war, between 34,000 and 50,000 young girls and women were forced into prostitution. Some historians claim the actual number of sex slaves was even higher.
The chief organizer of the military brothels was notorious Reinhard Heydrich . He was one of the top-ranking SS officials and the main architect of the Holocaust . His order to create state-controlled prostitution went into effect on 16 March 1940.
The industrial scale and the systematic approach to prostitution caused tremendous sexual violence.
The German commanders had many reasons for establishing military brothels.
The first reason was a high prevalence of venereal diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis among the soldiers. As a result, doctors medically examined prostitutes from military brothels on a regular basis. The Germans also forced their soldiers to use condoms.
The second reason was the fear of female spies. The Germans noticed the connection between their soldiers “socializing” with local women and the accuracy of the enemy attacks. Consequently, they were suspicious of good-looking women in the occupied territories.
The Nazis believed that sex with local women would lead to the disclosure of military secrets.
The third reason was obsessive homophobia. In the minds of the Nazis, the lack of sex with women would lead to homosexuality among men. If soldiers visited prostitutes, this would deter them from becoming homosexual.
The German generals advised soldiers a weekly visit to the brothels to prevent sexual excesses.
The military brothels showed German organization skills. They meticulously planned and recorded every activity in the brothels.
The women in the military brothels began their day at 6 a.m. with the medical check for venereal diseases. The doctors checked the women one to three times per week. From 11 a.m. till 1 p.m., the women got ready for work. From 2 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., they had to serve as sex slaves to the visiting German soldiers and officers. The schedule of the brothels varied across the regions.
Each soldier got fifteen minutes with a sex slave. Every visit cost three Reichsmarks , which would be around twenty US dollars in today’s value.
A soldier had to follow clearly defined procedures. First, he filled in a special questionnaire. Together with the questionnaire, he also received a bactericide and a condom.
Having sex without a condom wasn’t allowed. However, the officers offered women sizeable sums of money to have unprotected sex.
Afterward, the soldier would be sanitized for possible venereal diseases. Then he waited in a waiting room to get a sex slave and a room.
After he had sex, he was sanitized again and received a certificate that confirmed he was clean.
The German soldiers considered themselves as the “visitors.” In reality, they raped the poor women.
Some women in the military brothels willingly chose prostitution to avoid concentration camps. But most of the women were forced into prostitution. The Nazis made them choose between sexual slavery or death.
By the end of 1940, the Germans set up a vast network of military brothels across the occupied territories. However, they had difficulties finding prostitutes.
The Nazi solution for the lack of prostitutes was sexual slavery. The Germans conducted raids on the occupied cities and villages. They searched for women and teenage girls aged between fifteen and thirty.
The Germans would enter the pubs and forcibly take every beautiful woman. The women were afraid to walk the streets since they were kidnapped by the German police. They would load the women on trucks and drive them to unknown destinations. Most of the kidnapped women never returned home.
Another source of the sex slaves was the women from the concentration camps.
The Ravensbrück concentration camp was especially notorious for providing many sex slaves. Around 5,000 women were selected for the service in the military brothels. Most of them, knowing what kind of destiny awaited them, committed suicide.
The SS officers reserved the most attractive women for themselves.
The German soldiers didn’t care whether women in brothels were Aryan or Semitic. What was important was that they were attractive.
The Nazis promoted the superiority of the Aryan race, but their ideology didn’t hold true in the brothels. The sex slaves included Jews, Gypsies, Blacks, and Slavic women.
The Nazis stated that having sex in a brothel with a person of “lower race” was not harmful since it didn’t foster “inner bonding.”
Occasionally, the sex slaves received tattoos that permanently marked them as prostitutes. The most horrific was a tattoo of the word Feldhure (in German field whore ) across the woman’s chest. Next to the word Feldhure , the prostitutes also received a tattoo of their serial number.
To prevent pregnancies, the women were sterilized. The Nazi doctors often conducted the sterilization without anesthesia.
If women got a venereal disease or any other illness, the Nazis sent them for “treatment” in the nearby hospital. In reality, they never returned because they were shot.
The sex slaves were afraid the German soldiers would complain about the quality of sex. A few complaints could lead to the execution.
Women forced themselves not to resist. They knew that otherwise meant the gas chamber and the crematorium.
Each woman was raped anywhere between twenty-four and forty times per day. Their bodies couldn’t survive such abuse for a long time.
The life expectancy of the women in the German military brothels was around six months.
Most of the sex slaves died because of illnesses, suicide, murder, or pregnancy.
If women got pregnant, they removed them from the brothels after the third month of pregnancy. Often, they murdered them. If they were lucky, they were simply sent home. However, back home they received a huge social stigma of a “bad woman” for having sex with the Germans. Everyone forgot the fact they were forced into prostitution.
The women who survived the horrors of the military brothels were afraid to return home. In the Soviet Union, they could be shot. Consequently, the women kept the horrors of sexual slavery to themselves. For example, they described their time away as working in agriculture.
Nobody cared for the well-being of the helpless women. They were reduced to mere objects of men’s sexuality. Being forced at a gunpoint, women sexually served Germans soldiers. In most cases, they died from abuse, were murdered, or committed suicide.
Few of them who survived the war had to lock their pain inside. They had to be quiet about their suffering to avoid discrimination from society.

The town belongs to the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park and is rated 4-flowers at the towns and villages in bloom competition . The town's population at the 2013 census was 5,225. The inhabitants of the commune are known as Bitchois and Bitchoises .
The town is known for its large citadel originating from a castle built at the beginning of the 13th century. The fortress is noted for its resistance during the Franco-Prussian War . Louis-Casimir Teyssier , its commander and chief, held the place for about eight months with 3,000 men against about 20,000 Prussian and Bavarian soldiers until the French government ordered him to surrender after the ceasefire in 1871. The town became part of Germany after that date until the end of the First World War , when it was given back to France. During the Second World War it was annexed by the Third German Reich (1940–1944).
Bitche is located near the German border on the small river Horn , at the foot of the northern slope of the Vosges between Haguenau and Sarreguemines . [2]
The town of Bitche, which was formed from the villages of Rohr and Kaltenhausen in the 17th century, derives its name from the old stronghold (mentioned in 1172 as Bytis Castrum ) standing on a rock some 250 feet (76 m) above the town. This had long given its name to the countship of Bitsch, which was originally in the possession of the dukes of Lorraine . In 1297 it passed by marriage to Eberhard I of Zweibrücken-Bitsch , whose line became extinct in 1569, when the countship reverted to Lorraine. It passed with that duchy to France in 1766. [2]
After 1766 the town rapidly increased in population. The citadel, which had been constructed by Vauban on the site of the old castle after the capture of Bitche by the French in 1624, had been destroyed when it was restored to Lorraine in 1698. This was restored and strengthened in 1740 into a fortress that proved impregnable up until the 20th century. The attack upon it by the Prussians in 1793 was repulsed. [2]
In 1815 during Napoleon's Hundred Days , Brigadier-General Creutzer was the commandant. [3] Bitche was besieged by General Zollern's Fourth Infantry Division of the Austrian IV Corps , but Creutzer refused to surrender [4] until the general armistice.
Although Bitche was hotly contested by the Germans after the Battle of Wörth during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, it held out until the war's end. A large part of the fortification is built into the red sandstone rock, and was rendered bomb-proof; a supply of water was secured to the garrison by a deep well in the interior. [2] Commander of the fortress of Bitche was Louis-Casimir Teyssier . [ citation needed ] After the war, it was given to the German Empire as part of Alsace-Lorraine . It was given back to France in 1918.
The town is near the Maginot Line , into which the citadel was integrated. [ citation needed ] Alsace-Lorraine returned to Germany after the French Campaign in the summer of 1940 and remained under German occupation. The training ground at Bitche was utilized by the German Army to form new divisions, for example the 65th Infantry Division formed at Bitche in July 1942. [5] Bitche was liberated in December 1944 by Allied troops but was relinquished in the withdrawal forced by the German counteroffensive . In March 1945 the U.S. 100th Infantry Division broke through the Maginot Line in the Bitche area and liberated the town for good. The attack was a part of Operation Undertone . [ citation needed ]
After 1945, Bitche became one of the busiest military camps where all parts of the French army manoeuvered. Infantry and cavalry also went to Bitche for experimenting with new weapons during the Cold War. Special training took place against potential bacteriological attacks from the "EAST" side.
Until 1997, military service was compulsory in France. Millions of young soldiers had a few days of training in Bitche.
On March 19, 2021, the official page of Bitche on Facebook was removed without explanation. [6] After the incident was reported by media, Facebook restored the page and apologized to the town. [7]
Bitche has been twinned with Lebach , Saarland , Germany since 1979.
The town of Bitche was mentioned in BBC comedy panel game QI , in episode 9 of season 3 (or series "C", as the show refers to the series by letters of the alphabet ). Bill Bailey commented on the comical nature of seeing a sign "You are now leaving Bitche". [ citation needed ]
In 2021 the town's Facebook page was removed and reinstated. [8]
