Doorbusters are sold out within minutes, and shoppers are led to believe that the products will be gone forever after Black Friday is over. While this is true in some instances, it is completely untrue in other cases. Stores regularly bring back the same exact deals on Black Friday every single year, and sometimes they return with more expensive price tags. While this is not always a bad thing — in many cases it is actually helpful — it is important that shoppers are aware of what they are getting into. Time is limited on Black Friday, and there is no reason waste it on deals that will be there in the future. In order to show how often stores repeat their Black Friday deals, we compared items and prices for 25 stores from 2015 and 2016. Side-by-Side 2015/2016 Repeated Deal Image Comparisons Side-by-Side Picture Comparisons of Repeated 2015 and 2016 Black Friday Deals In order to show you how similar the repeated deals look, we have put together a variety of side-by-side comparisons to showcase the techniques that retailers use.

These are only a few examples of our complete list. As the screenshot shows, Ace is repeating their “Pre-Lit Brookhaven LED 13” Mini Hanging Basket or 22″ Hanging Basket” deal for 2016. In both instances, the price is $24.99. Since this is not an old-model electronic, there is really nothing wrong with Ace Hardware repeating this deal. Overall, we found that Ace had over five repeated deals from last year, but none are more expensive for 2016. As the screenshot shows, BJ’s is repeating their “Samsonite 3-pc. Luggage Set, Two Spinners, and a 26″ Duffel Bag” deal for 2016. In both instances, the price is $99.99, which is a savings of $70. As the screenshot shows, Dell Home is repeating their “New Alienware 15 Laptop” deal for 2016. In 2015, this laptop sold for $1,199.99, which was a savings of $300. For 2016, this laptop will be available for $1,299.99, which is a savings of only $200. Every feature appears to be identical except the graphic card may be slightly upgraded.

Whether or not this is worth an additional $100 is up to the individual, but the Alienware 15 could have been had for $100 less last year. As the screenshot shows, Harbor Freight is repeating their “44”, 13 Drawer Industrial Quality Roller Cabinet” deal for 2016. In 2015, this cabinet sold for $349.99, which was a savings of $680. For 2016, it will be available for $339.99, which is a savings of $690. In this situation, it is a better deal for those waiting a year. As the screenshot shows, JCPenney is offering a very similar deal on kitchen appliances for $9.99 after rebate that they offered last year, and the picture is even very similar. While some of the items are different and others are out of order, a few of them are duplicates. In addition to the duplicate deals in this picture, JCPenney has numerous other duplicate deals this year. As the screenshot shows, Kohl’s is repeating their “KitchenAid Classic Stand Mixer (KSM75)” deal for 2016. In both years, the mixer is $199.99 after mailing in a $30 rebate.

The retail price remains $299.99. While this price is the same, Kohl’s is also repeating their “The Big One King Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper” deal from last year. As referenced in the chart above, it is $2 more expensive this year. As the screenshot shows, Sam’s Club is repeating their “Up to $80 Off Tires” deal for 2016. The only difference is with the BF Goodrich price. In 2015, BF Goodrich tires were available for $50 to $70 off. For 2016, they will only be available for $50 off. In addition to that deal, Sam’s Club has numerous other repeated deals this year, but most of them are going to be cheaper. As the screenshot shows, Staples is repeating their “Brother MFC-J480dw Color Inkjet All-In-One Printer” deal for 2016. In 2015, this same printer was available for $49.99, which was a discount of $50. For 2016, this printer will be available for $59.99, which is $10 more expensive than last year. Considering this is a 1-year old electronic deal for more money, we advise you to tread carefully on this one.

In addition to that deal, Staples has numerous other repeated sale prices this year. As the screenshot shows, True Value is repeating their “Rayovac 24-pk. Alkaline Batteries” deal for 2016. In 2015, this same deal was available for $3.99. For 2016, it is available for $4.99, which is a dollar more. In addition to this deal, True Value had numerous other repeated deals, but most of them will be the same price this year. While this may seem like a negative post, I do not view it as such. Many stores repeat their Black Friday deals simply because of convenance. In many instances, this is not a bad thing, and it is even appreciated by the shopper. Since a lot of repeated deals come from the “home” and “kitchen” categories, knowing that Kohl’s is going to offer the same price every year for a blender is very helpful. In rare instances, it is actually a negative. As the above chart shows, Staples is offering the Brother MFC-J480dw Color Inkjet All-In-One Printer for $59.99.

They sold this exact same model last year for $49.99. In many cases this is not a huge deal, but it is an issue for electronics. In most cases, older model electronics drop in price, so this is a cause for concern. Besides convenance, retailers likely repeat deals because it works. If selling Goodyear tires for $50 every single year is successful, there is no reason to change the strategy. Harbor Freight repeated a lot of their tools and hardware deals, and many of them were actually cheaper this year. It really depends on the specific circumstances, but I do not think it is a bad thing in most instances. and current college Mathematics Instructor at Rowan University Retailers likely use duplicate deals throughout their Black Friday ads each year for a number of reasons that mainly focus around convenience. Firstly, it’s much easier for a retailer to simply edit the previous year’s ad scan and make a few changes than it is to recreate the entire thing from scratch each year.

For that reason, it’s to be expected that a number of the items in the ad scan will remain the same. Some of the Black Friday ad scans we post contain over 80 pages and over 600 deals. It is no easy feat to create this type of sales ad. Retailers will swap in the newest crazed items in their store, but the evergreen products will remain. There are some items such as towels, a coffee pot, etc. that are often duplicated that shoppers could feasibly need to purchase each year or every other year. Secondly, many shoppers grow accustomed to the look and feel of how a particular store’s ad scan will be year after year. Retailers do not want to remove that familiarity from their shoppers and generally will keep the ad scan similar. Certain categories of products will remain on the same pages and that means deals will repeat. Lastly, if retailers know they were extremely successful selling a specific product that is still relevant the next year, why wouldn’t they sell it again?

Remember, stores are in it for the profit and they want to replicate successful sales whenever they can. This is especially true if the store ran a successful sale where inventory was low and they think they can make even more sales the next year by duplicating the deal and increasing the inventory. From November 1 to November 11, we analyzed the 2015 and the 2016 Black Friday ad scans for 25 different stores in order to find repeated deals. If a store did not have at least 10 deals last year, they were not included in this study. Since Amazon does not have an official Black Friday ad scan, they were not included in this study. We then counted the number of deals that a store is repeating for the 2016 Black Friday shopping season. Some retailers had over 10 repeated deals, but for simplicity purposes we simply listed these retailers as “5+” in the “total # of repeated deals” column. Also, we only listed one repeated deal example for each store in the chart for simplicity purposes.
