As a loyal customer, I totally agree that Mountain Fox is the best garage door company in the Springs. Your customer service exceeds all others. I wish you did more than just garages. It’s always a pleasure working with your company. Keep up the great customer service. Mountain Fox (Jeff) was great to work with. Jeff called me when he wasn’t working and walked me through a resetting process. That’s about the highest quality of customer service one could receive. These folks are great. I have used them several times for a variety of projects on rentals, resale homes, and my own home. They are fast, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional and provide all that at a fair price. I have and will continue to recommend them highly!! Call The Mountain Fox16. I reached them by accident and not paying close attention. The guy installed with eyes on the ceiling, noise and w Words do not describe how poor the service I received from Fox. Day one they no call no showed so I called them to get a sales guy stating sorry we will be out

What a dishonor to be called “the worst garage door company in the nation.” But that’s a title bestowed on a Carrollton company notorious across the U.S. for its reputation for jacking up repair costs by selling unnecessary parts at high prices. The company, Garage Door Services, also goes by the name GDS. GDS uses hundreds of company names and phone numbers and owns hundreds more web domains that make the business appear local even when it’s not.The title of worst business was bestowed on GDS this month in an investigative report in Door + Access Systems, a garage door industry trade magazine. The story by Tom Wadsworth confirms my findings. I’ve investigated GDS since 2006, when my first Watchdog report on the company appeared.Wadsworth writes with astonishment that nothing can stop GDS from its shenanigans, not “suspended licenses, lawsuits, bad publicity, F ratings from the BBB, charges of deceptive practices, hundreds of customer complaints, hidden-camera stings on TV and accusations of elder abuse.”

I tried to ask company officials about this. Chief operating officer Lance Michael Willard answered: “Thank you for your interest in hearing our side of the story. At this time, we are not interested in being interviewed for your story. Thank you for reaching out.”GDS has a multimillion-dollar annual advertising budget, most of which is spent on Internet advertising. GDS creates names of businesses that are often one letter or word off from the names of established businesses in cities where GDS sets up shop. The similar names confuse customers.Someone looking for Overhead Door Company of Dallas may accidentally end up contacting GDS Overhead Door Company of Dallas, not realizing the difference. All calls to its shell companies, no matter where they come from in the U.S., are routed to the Carrollton call center and corporate offices in an old car dealership in the 2900 block of North Interstate 35E. The company uses a San Diego post office box.Gary Keown, owner of the original Overhead Door Company of Dallas, says customers call his business to complain about GDS jobs that go bad.

They believe he’s them.“We just apologize and tell them the truth: ‘You got taken.’”Sometimes he fixes a door problem caused by GDS for free.“I’m about ready to pull my hair out because of this problem,” he says. “We do everything we can, but we can’t overcome this.”At GDS, the goal set for repair techs who work on commissions up to 20 percent per job, is to run up as big a bill as possible. That’s the message in the training and in the Wednesday morning motivational meetings in Carrollton, former employees say.A $1,000 ticket is the goal. Remember that a new garage door can cost less.A repairman who worked for the company for two years tells me: “They like the thousand-dollar tickets. They train all their techs. They motivate them to make a thousand dollars.”He left because, he said, “They want people who’ll sell their soul to the company, work seven days a week, drive anywhere and charge what they can get.” The tech asked that I withhold his name because he has started his own business.

Mason Miller of Richardson doesn’t dispute the company’s title as “worst.” The 76-year-old called the wrong overhead door company. He ended up paying GDS $1,700 for a repair that should have cost around $100. All he needed was help programming his garage door opener. Instead, the tech sold him a new opener, a roller, springs and bearings. When I inquired, a GDS executive told me the company had refunded $700 to Miller. The company did send him a letter saying he would get a refund if he signed a no-disparagement agreement and not talk bad about the company. The tipoff that you’ve reached GDS instead of a local company is this: You hear a recording of a woman’s voice saying, “This call may be recorded.” Then the call rings into the Carrollton call center where a sales rep answers, “It’s a great day at Garage Door. Can I get your ZIP code?” You hear lots of bustle in the background, too.You can ask the company if it’s the one I write about here. They may not tell you.“

Whatever garage door company a customer thinks you are, you are that garage door company,” says Kate Morgan, a former GDS “quality assurance” employee.I’ll tell you more about Morgan’s experience and the company’s internal culture in Part 2 coming Sunday.Staff writer Marina Trahan Martinez contributed to this report.Check out “The Watchdog” at 11:20 a.m. Mondays on NBC5, talking about matters important to you.Garage Door Services answers calls at its Carrollton call center by warning that calls are recorded. Then a sales rep says, “It’s a great day at Garage Door. Can I get your ZIP code?”The original Overhead Door Company of Dallas distinguishes itself on its website with its name wrapped in a red ribbon.Garage door repairs should rarely cost more than a few hundred dollars. Be wary of a company that doesn’t have a listed physical address near you.Don’t mistake a great website for a great repair company.Never pay in full upfront. Never pay in cash.If possible, watch as the work is done.
