There are many different types of keys that can be used with garage door openers. Garage door remote keys are used in conjunction with automatic garage door openers.

These tools make it more convenient for people to access their garage from inside their vehicle in adverse weather conditions. Door openers also add protection by ensuring that only a person with a key that is programmed to be used with the opener can gain access to the garage. There are several different types of garage door remote keys that can be purchased for use with a garage door opener. Each of these keys has unique benefits that should be reviewed before a purchase is made. Personal preferences and needs are typically used to determine which key is right for an individual. Garage remote keys that include a keychain attachment can be added to a key ring for easy access. Drivers have the option to keep the key that allows them to get into their garage right next to the key for their car. These small keys are typically designed in a rectangular or square shape. A small, circular button on the front of the keychain can be pushed when a person would like to gain access to their garage.

Some keychain garage remote keys can only be used with openers that use a 10-key code to pair with the remote. Buyers should review the specifications of the individual key that they would like to purchase to determine whether this limitation applies to the key. Older openers usually do not use 10-key codes for security. Visor clips are useful because of their easy accessibility. These garage remote keys have one or more buttons on the front of the device that can be pushed to open a garage door. The range varies according to the model, but the range for a visor clip is generally around 100 feet. This means that drivers are able to touch the button as they are driving up to their home so that they can drive right into their garage when they arrive. A clip located on the back of the key is used to keep it clipped to the vehicle's sun visor. Drivers are easily able to access the button that opens their garage door with this convenient feature. Some visor clip garage remote keys are equipped with two buttons on the front.

These keys can be programmed to be compatible with two different garage doors. Remote transmitters are basically stand-alone remotes that do not attach to a key ring or clip to any part of a vehicle. These remotes look similar to a television remote, but there may only be one or two buttons located on the face of the device. A disadvantage of this remote is that it can be easily lost inside of a vehicle. People who are diligent about placing the tool in their glove box or center console to ensure that it can be easily found when needed may be able to take advantage of a remote transmitter. An important step after a garage remote key has been chosen is ensuring that the key has been programmed to be used with an opener. If there are remotes that were previously programmed to be used with the opener, these remotes will need to be cleared from the system. Garage door openers generally come with a learning button that is used for programming purposes. This button may be located underneath the light cover on the opener.
