Instead, they were in Sarnia the night before Ryker Daponte-Michaud died, buying used children’s furnishings and selling mini-bike parts from a sketchy, messy townhouse. Testimony on Thursday at the trial of the couple, charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life, gave more insight into what the pair were up to when they weren’t getting medical treatment for the toddler. There was more about how the couple lived and how they were perceived by neighbours on Penny Lane.

And there was testimony from a Children’s Aid worker involved in Dumont’s case. Most intriguing were their movements on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, the night before Ryker died. Dumont and Bakker showed up at a Sarnia home to buy pink bedroom furnishings that had been advertised on a Facebook market site called Mommy Market Sarnia-Lambton. Annette Barcroft had placed an ad to sell pink curtains, a trolley cart, a lamp, a small table, pictures and a phone. A woman named Amanda, whose picture showed her with red hair, lip and nose piercings and a hat that said Obey, answered the ad and wanted everything, Barcroft testified. A car pulled up to Barcroft’s house later that evening, parked on the street. Barcroft said she and her husband took the items to the street and the woman got out of the car. A man with a mohawk haircut, whom Barcroft described to police as “the kind of person you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley,” got out and opened the trunk using a screwdriver.

The woman handed over $50. “She said it was a bad day for her and her tires had been slashed,” Barcroft said. The woman also said her “daughter was excited for the pink room she was going to have.” The car stayed parked for about 20 minutes before it left, Barcroft said. When she saw Dumont’s picture in the newspaper — the same one on her Facebook account — and the police asking for information about her, Barcroft said she called them. Daniel Petru testified he met a man and woman at a townhouse on May 20, 2014, near Indian Road and Confederation Street to buy minibike parts. “The place was overrun with items,” he said. Petru said he saw a new lighter on the floor and joked that it was used for smoking crack cocaine. The couple said they didn’t do that, and then the man pulled up a blanket on a couch revealing a glass pipe used for smoking meth. Petru said there was at least half a gram in the pipe. The jury heard from Colette Chapman, a forensic support specialist with the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex.

Chapman was called early in the morning on May 22, 2014, about Ryker’s death and was told there were other children involved. There was already a file opened for Dumont and her children, she said. At the Strathroy-Caradoc police station, Chapman was briefed and shown photos. “I remember looking at a picture of the child and I remember having to step out and consult my supervisor,” she said, her voice wavering. “There was a picture of his lying down in a onesie and some obvious injuries.” Chapman went with police later that morning to apprehend Dumont’s three girls, who were at Bakker’s mother’s home. Chapman said she stayed in the car while the girls were brought out. They were asking for their mother. They calmed down on the car ride, she said. Earlier in the day, Christina Fleming completed her testimony. She had an affair with Bakker for two months before he moved to Sarnia in late 2013. Fleming testified she complained in May 2014 to the London and Middlesex Housing Corp. about loud music Bakker was playing.

She also complained to Strathroy-Caradoc police that Bakker was driving fast — without a licence — on the street. “My concern was about having someone like that living on a street with kids,” Fleming testified.
