Shopping for the right crib and mattress is an important first step in ensuring the safety of your newborn—yet purchasing a so-called "standard" crib mattress size can be confusing. The reason: There's no real "standard," even though the size and thickness of all crib mattress are regulated by the Federal government. The law states that the minimum size must be 27 1/4” x 51 5/8” and not thicker than 6 inches. Still, there can be a slight variation in width, length, and depth among crib mattress. So before heading to the store, make sure to have the exact measurements of your crib.Width and length:In both the U.S. and Canada, crib mattress size may range between 27 5/8" to 28 5/8" wide and 51 3/4" to 53" in length.Depth: The depth of the crib mattress can vary even more—a fact that can be quite frustrating for new parents trying to find the best option for their new bundle of joy. Coil crib mattresses tend to be on the thicker side—between 5 to 6"—whereas foam crib mattresses are more on the order of 4 to 6".

Firmness: Keep in mind that a firm mattress is preferred over soft mattresses. In fact, the firmer the better. Soft sleeping surfaces create a suffocation hazard for infants and increase the risk of SIDS—the leading cause of death in infants in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Put it to the test: Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges. Does it snap back readily? You don't want it to conform to the shape of your baby's head. Fit: It's also important to focus on whether the crib mattress is centered on the platform and fits snugly in the crib frame. A good rule of thumb: If you can squeeze more than two fingers between the side of the mattress and the crib frame, the mattress is too small and could lead to suffocation or entrapment. While you don't want to cut corners when it comes to buying a crib mattress, you also don't have to blow your entire nursery budget. According to Consumer Reports, a good quality mattress can cost anywhere from $90 to $200.

It worked really well the first year but over time the covering material has cracked and split which has posed to be a problem during our potty training stage. We had to buy a cover for it because it hasn't held up.

Still comfortable for our little one, though. We are 3 years into having this mattress. DaVinci Twilight 6 inch Ultra Firm Deluxe Crib Mattress /  See all DaVinci Crib Mattresses My granddaughter slept on this for 2 years with no problems, and now we are using it as a toddler mattress. This was a good product. I am very disappointed with this mattress, which turned out to be poor quality. We bought the mattress before our daughter was born, and she has been sleeping in her crib from the time when she turned 2 months old. Well, now our baby is 5 months and the mattress has a big depression where the baby's bottom usually is! I couldn't believe my eyes a few days ago when I changed the sheets and realized this! Our baby is in the 60th percentile, and she is the only one ever in the crib, so there's no excuse for the mattress to already be broken after 3 months of use. Both delivered on time and undamaged! Perfect firm, comfortable mattress! This mattress is the perfect size, firmness, weight and feel.

I've been reading for months about baby mattresses and Consumer Reports, along with many other sources, say that Foam mattresses are better for several different reasons. We have a Graco Lauren crib. This mattress fits snugly in the crib, leaving virtually no space between railings and mattress. The mattress is light enough to still change the sheets with ease. Best price on the whole web was here at Overstock. This Mattress is perfect for the crib that we purchased. The mattress is thick for a babies crib and there is little or no space on the sides so that my fear of my daughter being caught between the crib and mattress can go away.It has a plastic cover, I didn't catch that when reading the description. You probaby wouldn't have to get mattress protectors with this one. Very lightweight-makes it easy to change sheets. The only disadvantage is the plastic cover makes a noise when you put you child to bed-sometimes wakes up my little one. It's water (pee) proof unlike many other baby mattresses
