the unabridged journals of sylvia plath

/ men have used her meanly. she will eat them.

/ out of the ash I rise with my red hair. and I eat men like air.

/ I hated the idea of serving men in any way.

/ your silence is not your weakness but the beginning of your strength.

/ suddenly I wonder, where is the girl that I was last year? two years ago? what would she think of me now?

/ i am myself, that is not enough.

/ you want a heart in this life, you pay for it.

/ it is awful to want to go away and to want to go nowhere.

/ I am learning peacefulness, lying by myself quietly

/ I could love you violently, if I let myself.

/ in march I'll be rested, caught up and human.

/ something in me wants more. I can't rest.

/ the silence depressed me. it wasn't the silence of silence. it was my own silence.

/ I wait and ache. I think I have been healing.

/ I am both worse and better than you thought.

/ I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am. I am. I am.

/ I wanted to be where nobody I knew could ever come.

/ someone, somewhere, can you understand me a little, love me a little?

/ what have I eaten? lies and smiles.

/ outside it is warm and blue and april.

/ if you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed.

/ the worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.

/ I don't know what it is like to not have deep emotions. even when I feel nothing, I feel it completely.

/ I like people too much or not at all

/ I think I made you up inside my head.

/ I desire the things which will destroy me in the end.

/ I’m glad the rain is coming down hard. it’s the way I feel inside.

/ I'm not sure why it is, but I love food more than just about anything else.

/ I felt myself melting into the shadows like the negative of a person I'd never seen before in my life.

/ what I fear most, I think, is the death of the imagination. the poverty of life without dreams is too horrible to imagine.

/ what horrifies me most is the idea of being useless: well-educated, brilliantly promising, and fading out into an indifferent middle age.

/ I am living now in a kind of present hell, and god knows what ceremonies of life or love can patch the havoc wrought.

/ I hate handing over money to people for doing what I could just as easily do myself, it makes me nervous.

/ sometimes I feel like I'm not solid. I'm hollow. there's nothing behind my eyes. I'm a negative of a person. all I want is blackness, blackness and silence.

/ why can't I try on different lives, like dresses, to see which fits best and is more becoming?

/ the moon lays a hand on my forehead

/ kiss me and you'll know how important I am.

/ I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of sceneryβ€”air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, this is what it is to be happy.

/ we grow. it hurts at first.

/ I am terrified by this dark thing. that sleeps in me.

/ although, I admit, I desire, occasionally, some backtalk from the mute sky.

/ I wish to cry. yet, I laugh, and my lipstick leaves a red stain like a bloody crescent moon on the top of the beer can.

/ I need a father, I need a mother, I need some older, wiser being to cry to. I talk to god but the sky is empty.

/ girls are not machines that you put kindness coins into until sex falls out.

/ I love my rejection slips. they show me I try.

/ paralysis again. how I waste my days.
