SINGAPORE – In what s considered one of the most controversial issues of the weekend, a Hong Kong court has ruled that a child who allegedly abused his mother at an age of 11 is now a legal adult on her father s side.

After ruling that a five-year-old girl who was found to be 11 years old who was abused while in foster care in 2012 was allowed to join in child protective work, the High Court on Tuesday reversed that ruling by handing down a sentence of almost 12 years in prison that could make her eligible to live with her mother.

The ruling must be upheld only if there is compelling compelling reasons to make the parents eligible to be involved in child protective work to protect the children, said Chief Judge Ged Hwang, chairman of the central court of Hong Kong s Supreme Court.

The judgment is not the first time that the court has issued such a verdict, however, the ruling comes just days before the upcoming trial of a 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly abused while in foster care because of her age.

Hwang s ruling has been taken under advisement by a special prosecutor appointed by the Attorney General s Council to look into a case concerning whether a child who was abused at 16 years old should have access to information about her legal existence before entering foster care.
