1,236 posts, read 3,178,857 times I purchased a 4" memory-foam mattress topper which came with a card saying: "Thank you for purchasing this product. We know that it will provide you years of comfort. Upon removing it from the packaging you may notice a newness scent. In order to maximize your enjoyment of this product, it is recommended that you air it out for 8 or more hours in a well ventilated space before using, to allow the newness scent to completely dissipate." Most (not all) of the odor did dissipate, but I'm wondering if it's toxic in nature? Does anyone else have any experience with this product It IS comfortable to sleep on, so far (only used it 2 nights). Most of the bad smell has dissipated, but not all. Now, however -- the additional 4" of height to my already tall q/size mattress has made it a challenge for my old body to get on and off the bed without twisting so now I have a slight side-ache from getting off the high bed, this morning. Still......... it IS VERY COMFORTABLE to sleep on..... so I'll give it one more night to see if I can learn how to get on & off without breaking my back 8,564 posts, read 15,201,886 times Originally Posted by Flamingo13 My 2nd floor bedroom is as cold as a meat locker so I use an electric mattress pad, which I sleep on --- and an electric blanket on top!! Since I purchased it at Walmart for $131, I'm confident they will take it back, if I give up. I'm still testing it Like I said..... it IS very comfortable. 48,527 posts, read 69,952,467 times I can sleep on them because I find them hot. 9,718 posts, read 5,147,656 times I started out with the foam topper and loved it so much that I bought the foam mattress (Costco). I am at the "age" of sweats and I find no difference whether I sleep on a regular mattress or my foam The smell (newness scent) did go away the next day for me. I left the windows open and really by the evening it was gone (and it wasn't that bad to begin with). 43,858 posts, read 38,473,678 times I have a couple of memory foam pillows I got as a gift. I love their shape and how they bounce back...but they certainly DO retain heat. At first I just thought my hot flashes were getting out of hand...................... until I spoke to another friend who also had them.I love those things.

Its innovative technology provides many people with a more comfortable support system for a better night's sleep. Because memory foam uses a temperature-sensitive system, you might wonder whether you can use it with an electric mattress cover.

According to Comfort House's Jeffrey Gornstein, this is perfectly acceptable. Just keep the temperature sensitivity of memory foam in mind when doing so, since memory foam is more sensitive to fluctuating temperatures than traditional bedding materials. Place the memory foam topper or pad on top of the electric mattress cover. Arrange the memory foam topper or pad evenly so that it covers the bed completely. Place your bed sheets over the memory foam topper or pad. Make sure the fitted sheet is sufficiently secured. This will hold the memory foam topper or pad in place. Make up the rest of your bed. Set your electric mattress cover on the lowest setting to test the memory foam's response. Because memory foam absorbs and retains heat, you do not need a high setting on electric mattress covers. Remember that memory foam adjusts to temperature. When the foam is cooler, the memory foam topper or pad will feel firmer. When it is warmer, it will feel softer. Set your electric mattress cover to turn off automatically after a certain amount of time to prevent too much heat.

Be careful not to set your electric mattress cover too high to prevent overheating. First off, it’s important to note the differences between mattress pads and mattress protectors. A mattress pad is a relatively thick piece of quilted material that sits on top of your mattress, but below your sheets. A mattress pad can help to protect your mattress to some degree from general wear and tear, and help reduce allergens, but in general you’d purchase a mattress pad to add comfort to your mattress. The primary reason I would suggest buying a mattress pad is because you’re unhappy with your current mattress and a mattress pad can be a nice short term solution to add comfort to an older or uncomfortable mattress.

If you’re buying a brand new mattress, whether it’s foam, innerspring, or otherwise, there is really no need to purchase a mattress pad. Mattress toppers would be a similar option if you’re seeking a temporary solution to add comfort, but that’s another blog post. A mattress protector also sits directly on the surface of your mattress, but below your sheets. It’s similar to a fitted sheet in the way it covers the mattress. They are generally made from cotton, polyester, or other materials, and are designed to help repel liquid and prevent other sources of damage (dirt, dust, allergens, etc). The most common use for a mattress protector is simply as a liquid resistant protector. In the event you were to spill a drink, have an accident prone child or pet, or have a sexy-times accident, the mattress protector will help to ensure your expensive mattress stays fresh, clean, and unsoiled. I would highly recommend a mattress protector to anyone who is purchasing a new mattress, or already owns a mattress without a mattress protector.

They are an inexpensive way to ensure your mattress stays nice for years. Most mattress protectors are fairly thin. They don’t have to be thick to do their job if they are made well. As such, they have very little impact in terms of the feel and comfort of the mattress they are on. My wife and I have been using a pretty good and inexpensive mattress protector we purchased from Amazon when we bought our mattress. We’ve slept several times with it off to get a sense of the feel and I cannot tell any noteworthy difference in feel, comfort, or sound when the mattress protector is on vs. with it off. In addition to protecting your mattress from damage, liquids, etc. they can also aid in reducing allergens, dust mites, and asthma issues. If you have an older mattress that you’re not terribly happy with I would recommend a mattress pad. Mattress pads are an inexpensive way to add a little life to older or otherwise uncomfortable mattresses. If it’s a new mattress, there is no need to purchase a mattress pad (assuming you are happy with the mattress).
