When entering this English course, I did not know what to expect. I knew the course was going to be a lot of writing and work, but I would be able to get through it. A nervousness did fall over me while I started my first writing assignment. I knew I had a lot of improvement to do when it came to writing essays. I soon realized that college essays were nowhere near what someone would find in a high school setting. Another reason why it was really hard for me to write high school essays…. Once I began English I will admit that I was worried that I wouldn 't meet the expectations of college writing. In my past high school career I did well as a writer but many times have I been told that I lack a handful of writing skills. Such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and as we called it flow. As I began my first semester of college I was anxious about how I would turn out in my English class. I was both a slow reader, and poorly motivated writer. Both of these attributes lead me to register in A level English courses, where I would have room to grow and gain confidence in my reading and writing abilities. Luckily for me, I was assigned to the same teacher for both my freshman and sophomore year, and my progress did not go unnoticed. After achieving an A- in my freshman English course, I was considering taking the leap to honors, but I was not quite sure if I was ready. My senior year, I was taught to write on a whole different level of writing. It was very difficult for me to adjust because I was not used to writing an eight page long essays or how to do appropriate research and citing it. In college, I will face various types of challenges and I know I need to prepare for it. For certain, I will use the same writing skills that I developed through high school, however, there will be new skills that I need to…. In the past, I rarely received satisfying grades on my papers and essays. I had very little confidence in myself prior to taking this course, and I did not think I was going to achieve much. Before taking this class my writing was very unorganized, hard to read, and did not flow well. I never used thesis statements, and I had very weak transitions. After taking this class I can now write strong thesis statements and map out my writing. However, the structure did not seem to work here because this was one of my first times writing whole papers about something other than literature. It was difficult to know whether I was being clear enough with my point while writing because instead of analyzing quotes, I had to analyze something much greater. This caused me to have my first C on a paper for class. Thankfully, I was able to redo it for a better grade. An example of having to write about something great is that, I never truly understood pop culture and yet I had to analyze an aspect of it. In high school, my teachers never had me write reflections on any of my work; therefore, I thought it was quite odd that I had to do it for this course. At the start of the semester, I did not see the point in writing reflections and really did not put much effort into them. I started to see the value in writing reflections as the semester progressed. I started to see that reflecting on my work benefits the reader and myself. Reflections allow the reader to see my thoughts on my process and writing; furthermore, reflections allow me to think about problems I encountered and how I worked past them and show my progression as a writer. I end up spending way too much time overthinking what to write, that it ends up not sounding as well as I know I am capable of. We barely ever had to write an essay freshman or sophomore year, so getting into higher level classes I did not acquire the necessary experience. English is an undoubtedly versatile subject with countless interpretations and I find it difficult to understand what I believe my audience would like. If I did not have a problem with over thinking, I would be a superior writer. What took me by surprise is that this semester of English was quite challenging but also fun at the same time.
