eBay – When To “Buy Now” And When To Bid

eBay – When To “Buy Now” And When To Bid

You will often find yourself faced with the choice of paying a fixed price or continuing to bid. This choice can be presented to you in a single auction, or you can choose from different auctions of different types.

So should you use the “Buy It Now” button or keep trying to outdo everyone else? It’s all a matter of weighing the pros and cons.

Buy now.

– The advantages.

When you use Buy It Now, you know the sale price and you can take some time to decide whether to pay it or not, you can even negotiate.

You don’t need to keep an eye on the auction or get caught up in the last-minute bidding frenzy that is now inevitable on any popular item.

Not only that, but the seller will be happy to get a fixed price for their item, and will likely be nicer to you than usual. Some sellers may be a little resentful when they feel you got too big a bargain on their item.

– The disadvantages.

You will almost certainly pay more for the item, especially with more expensive items. Plus, it takes some of the fun out of eBay.

Aren’t you there for an auction after all? If you want to pay a fixed price, there are thousands of online stores you could visit. It’s like pressing ‘cash out’ instead of ‘bet’ on a slot machine – it’s the boring option. But then maybe that’s what you want.

These rules are relatively constant: there are few occasions when you use Buy It Now! would allow you to get something cheaper, or when bidding would be an easier way to do it. In the end, as with so many things in life, it’s a simple matter of price versus convenience, and it’s up to you.

However, there are times when strategic use of the Buy It Now! it can be a useful tool to help you outperform the competition.

If the current bid is almost as high as the Buy It Now price, why bid higher and continue the contest? Clicking that button is a no-brainer.

The same goes for times when a seller has, for some reason, set the Buy It Now price. just a little higher than its asking price for deals. Why bother going through all the trouble of making an offer?

You may also find that there are times when you should leave the Buy It Now button as a last resort – it can be a useful way to end last-minute contests with a decisive “this is mine” gesture.

In fact, there are all kinds of tricks you can use on eBay, if you want to get ahead of the game.

Remember that most buyers on eBay are casual and don’t know what they’re doing – a little knowledge can go a long way to gaining an advantage. Our next email will have some tips and tricks for you.

Tips and tricks for eBay auction buyers.

eBay isn’t just an auction and marketplace – it’s often a lot like a game. Like any game, you can get ahead if you think strategically, using your head to outsmart other buyers and get the best price. Here are some things you can try.

Shop in the summer.

This is simple, but effective. Summer is the quiet season on eBay: almost everything sells for less. While everyone else is enjoying the sun, spend a little time finding some real bargains.

Hit them for pennies.

Outperform people for pennies instead of a few dollars; If they don’t re-verify before the auction ends, you will be the winner. However, to prevent people from using this tactic on you, always offer strange and hard-to-guess amounts instead of round numbers.

Play dirty.

If you know when the auction ends, you can get in at the last second and outbid your rivals.

Chances are, they won’t have time to sit in front of the auction waiting for it to end; As a general rule, the one who stays wins. However, if someone else retaliates at the end of the auction, try not to get carried away in those last few seconds and end up paying too much!

Take risks.

This is a strategy for the bravest eBay buyer. All the advice you’ll see for eBay beginners tells you to buy items that have good pictures, clear descriptions, trustworthy sellers, and everything in between. If you’re brave, why don’t you take a risk and do the exact opposite?

Many buyers will not want that item from the seller with a rating of 5, no image, and a one-line description. If you take a calculated risk and bid anyway, you may be able to make a small bid and win by default.

There are people on eBay who make a living by winning auctions like these, taking good pictures of the item, writing a good description, and then reselling it for a big profit.

Be careful though – do this long enough and you will inevitably lose your money at some point. It is especially unwise to try this with very high value items.

Avoid bidding wars.

There are few things on eBay that are so rare that you’ll only see them once and never again. There are usually quite a few sellers who have an item.

What’s more, they will usually have more than one for sale, even if they haven’t listed all of them at once. Always check your seller’s history to see if they sell your item every time, and if they do, wait for the next one instead of bidding sky high.

Now, there may come a time in your eBay life when you realize you’ve screwed up your bid and wish there was an “undo” button. Here’s the good news for you: there is! The next email will deal with the withdrawal of your eBay offers.

When and how to remove your eBay bid (and why you might not want to).

eBay is a bit strict about allowing you to withdraw your bid. They call it ‘offer retraction’ and they have a strict set of conditions that you have to meet before you are allowed to do so. These are eBay’s three acceptable reasons for withdrawing a bid.

You made a typo: This means you accidentally entered the wrong amount in the bid box, offering a much higher price than you intended. This can be scary – imagine bidding $100 and accidentally adding an extra ‘0’! In this situation, you can withdraw your bid and bid again if you wish.

Item description changed: If you bid on something and then the seller updates the description, you have the right to withdraw your bid. After all, it wouldn’t be fair to force you to take something you now realize you don’t want.

Seller can’t be contacted: If the seller’s emails bounce back and they don’t answer their phone, then the auction obviously can’t go on and you can cancel it.

So how do I withdraw my offer?

eBay hides the bid retraction form a bit, because they don’t like people using it. You can find it by going here: http://cgi1.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBidShow.

Now all you need is your auction item number – you can find it in the top right hand corner of the item description page. If you can’t see it on the page, look in your browser’s title bar and in any email eBay has sent you about your bid on the item. Choose one of the three allowed reasons, click “withdraw offer” and you’re done.

Are there any consequences?

Well, yes, there are. The more unethical among you might have considered that you could simply cancel the bids anytime you want by saying you accidentally entered the wrong amount. eBay is one step ahead of you.

Every time you withdraw an offer, it’s counted on your comments page for all to see, and anyone with a lot of withdrawn offers looks more than a little dodgy. eBay also says that abusing the bid retraction feature could get you banned.

So is there a way to back out of your offer without facing a penalty? There is if your vendor is nice, and most are.

Sellers can cancel bids on their auctions at any time, and if you email them a half-decent excuse, most will be more than happy to do it for you. After all, they don’t want their article to go to someone who doesn’t like it, as you might leave negative comments.

Of course, withdrawing your bid should still be a rare thing – you won’t win auctions that way! If you’ve followed us this far, chances are you’ve already won an auction, or are close, but you might be a little stumped as to what to do next. Our next email will give you some tips.

You won that eBay auction! What are you doing now?

It’s a heady feeling when you win your first auction on eBay: a mix of happiness and maybe just a little bit of fear. After all, there seems to be a lot to do before you can get your item. What will you do next?

The simple answer is: send the payment to the seller as quickly as possible. The faster you pay, the more your seller will like you and the sooner your item will arrive. But how do you do it? It all depends on how you plan to pay.

PayPal.

PayPal is one of the most popular payment options on eBay, to the point that eBay decided to buy the company. Allows instant electronic payment over the Internet.

The money goes instantly from your credit or debit card to the seller’s PayPal account, where you can use it for online purchases or transfer it to your bank.

eBay offers incentives for using PayPal, and almost all sellers now accept it. Its instant nature makes sellers very happy and means they can pack and ship your item and leave you positive feedback within hours of the auction ending.

When paying by PayPal, you will be covered by PayPal’s own insurance and guarantees, as well as those that your card may have.

Checks and money orders.

This is old fashioned payment, and will lead to a long wait to receive your item. You must post the check or money order, then the seller must take it to the bank and clear it, and only then does the item ship.

The only reason to use this method is if you or the seller are wary of electronic payment methods. However, if you’re willing to go to the trouble with these sellers, you might end up with a very cheap item, as most buyers just don’t bother.

When paying by check or money order, be sure to print the eBay order confirmation page (it will be emailed to you) and place it in the envelope with your payment.

Underline or circle key information, such as your mailing address and item number. Finally, remember to be patient: keep in touch with the seller, as it may take a month or two before everything falls into place and your item appears.

Money Transfers and Bank Deposits.

Some sellers may ask you to pay them using a transfer service like Western Union, or simply give you a bank account number and ask you to pay money into it.

Unless you really trust the seller, it’s generally a bad idea: these methods are hard to track and you’re unlikely to get your money back if something goes wrong. Paying in cash, needless to say, is an even worse idea.

It’s a lot to take in, right? I’m sure you now have some questions, which is why the next email will be a small eBay Buyer FAQ. Hopefully we can resolve any issues you may have.

eBay Buyer FAQ.

So do you have a question? Has something gone seriously wrong and you don’t know what to do? Well, fair enough. These are the questions I hear all the time from buyers.

Does eBay have a customer service department I can call?

eBay is notoriously difficult to contact, should you ever need to; sometimes it seems like they expect the site to run itself.

You can email them, as long as you don’t have your heart set on a consistent response: go to http://pages.ebay.com/help/contact_us/_base/index.html. You may have better luck in a ‘live help’ web chat here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/n-livehelp.html.

Only eBay Power Sellers (sellers with a very high feedback rating) can call customer service. If you really want to try your luck, type ‘ebay phone number [your country]’ into a search engine and you’ll probably find something.

Unfortunately, chances are you’ve gone to so much trouble for the privilege of leaving a message on the answering machine.

It may sound cruel, but imagine how many people would call eBay every day with the dumbest questions if they gave out their phone number everywhere. His Wild West nature is, in a way, part of the charm of him.

eBay sent me an email saying they are closing my account. That I have to do?

This email asks for your password, right? It’s a scam, an attempt to scare you into giving up your details and then stealing your account. eBay will never ask you for your password or any other account details by email.

eBay says that you should only enter your password on pages whose addresses start with http://signin.ebay.com/.

They even offer a special ‘Account Keeper’ as part of their toolbar, which allows you to verify that you’re not giving your password to a dubious fake site. You can read more here: http://pages.ebay.com/toolbar/accountguard_1.html.

It seems too good to be true. How does eBay make money?

For you, the buyer, eBay is free. However, sellers pay all sorts of fees: a listing fee for each item they list, a final value fee (a percentage of what the item sold for).

They may pay optional fees for additional services, such as Buy It Now, additional images, reserve prices, highlighting the auction, making it bold, including it first in search results, or even putting it on the front page. You can see a complete list of fees at http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html.

However, it’s obviously worth it for sellers, or they wouldn’t continue to use eBay. The system is quite efficient and basically forces both eBay and sellers to keep their profit margins as low as possible; otherwise prices will simply go too high and buyers will stop buying.

How safe is eBay?

Well, that just so happens to be the subject of our next email. All of eBay’s security services for buyers and sellers are in one place, called “SafeHarbor.” SafeHarbor handles fraud prevention and investigation, helps with dispute resolution, and keeps violators in check. Read all about this next time, and be safe.
