The brand is known for the Dutch Design Chair and aims to design affordable and practical designer products in a sustainable way. Dutch Design Brand stands for sustainable, practical products that are distinguished by their simplicity and beauty. They strive for affordable designs that are accessible to a large group of people. Respect for people and the environment is a basic requirement. Lifecycle of the brand Tim Vardy studied Classical Piano at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He is the creator of the famous folding chair, the Dutch Design Chair. Tim works daily from his office in Haarlem, located next to the iconic Windmill De Adriaan. In other words, there is sufficient 'Holland' inspiration for Dutch Design Brand.

No seats left   Which came first? 'The Dutch Design Brand' or 'The Dutch Design Chair? The idea for The Dutch Design Chair originated in June 2011 when Tim Vardy visited the North Sea Jazz Festival. When he saw that there were no seats left, he came up with the idea to design a practical cardboard chair with a beautiful print. The chair proved to be such a hit that Tim decided to design a complete line under the name Dutch Design Brand. But the Dutch Design Chair wil always remain Tim's favourite! Find the famous chair in our shop and choose a print that suits you! Dutch Design Whiteboard of Dutch Design BrandSUPERMODELS is an initiative of Concern and has a message: ‘Dutch Design to scale’. The main motive is the overall demand for an all-inclusive, representative show about Dutch Design. SUPERMODELS combines different design aspects; architecture, interior- and product design. The show has three sub-exhibitions: Dutch Design Chairs, Dutch Architect Design Houses and the presentation of the Dutch Design House.

For the realisation of the exhibition we Concern has worked closely with the Dutch Art & Culture Authorities, Designers & Design studios and  market leaders with a strong Dutch heritage. Dutch Chairs and Iconic Architecture: a century Supermodels provides an overview of a century of iconic Dutch chairs and architecture at  an accessible scale. Designs by Gerrit Rietveld, Martin Visser, Bruno Ninaber van Eyben, Marcel Wanders, Joep van Lieshout, Ineke Hans and Maarten Baas amongst others have been 3D printed. 3D printing is currently being used for the making of many products – for example jewelery – and even for a life size building (the 3D printed canal house in Amsterdam by DUS Architects). However, within this project 3D printing is used for its original purpose: creating scale models. Each of the chairs is produced in the same white polyamide and at the same scale 1:6, enabling a perfect comparison of variations in form. In addition, Supermodels presents scale models of a selection of houses designed by Gerrit Rietveld, Van Doesburg/van Eesteren, Jan Benthem, Hans van Heeswijk and other architects.

Apart from the scale models of chairs and architecture, Supermodels presents a variation on a very appealing historic theme: the dollshouse. A diverse selection of designers, artists and companies have been asked to design an interior at scale 1:12. Amongst them designers / architects Makkink & Bey, textile designer Claudy Jongstra, wayfinding specialist Mijksenaar, exhibition designers Kossmann.dejong, artist Krijn de Koning and furniture manufacturer DUM. Together, these designs to scale, ranging from hotel rooms, to offices and exhibition galleries, form the Dutch Design (Doll) House, which can continuously be extened with more Dutch design ideas. With this, Supermodels creates a broad overview of the creativity of Dutch designers, artists and architects and shows that the fame of the current generation originates from a rich history of design. Ingeborg de Roode - Stedelijk Museum AmsterdamA survey in miniature of significant Dutch designs, ranging from interior and furniture design to architecture.

Iconic works by contemporary designers are seen in miniature in relationship with those of earlier examples from the time of Gerrit Rietveld and H.P. Berlage. SUPERMODELS highlights the creativity of Dutch designers and architects and reveals that today’s generations are part of a long and distinguished tradition. The exhibition centers around furniture produced by 3D printing. An unique feature of the exhibition is the 3D body scan booth, where visitors can learn more about the 3D printing process and even make a 3D scan of themselves. A documentary on the making of the Dutch Design (Doll) House will also be screened. SUPERMODELS is a unique collaboration between Dutch designers, producers and market operators and has been financed entirely through private funds. In the coming years, SUPERMODELS will tour to at least twelve foreign locations including London, Berlin, Washington and Chicago. The SUPERMODELS presentation was initiated by Concern, the design studio that, among other things, created the interior of the Restaurant Stedelijk and the vitrines in the design collection presentation of the museum.

Concern’s creative director Gilian Schrofer conceived the idea for SUPERMODELS when the studio took part in a number of trade missions over the years. Dutch Design Architect Houses is a compilation of Dutch architecture and presents several scale models of exemplary residential dwellings such as Maison d’Artiste by Van Doesburg & Van Eesteren and the private residence Hardglas by Jan Benthem. Dutch Design Models features over 100 Dutch chair designs of the last century, including Rietveld’s Zigzag Chair, Marcel Wanders’ Knotted Chair, the Ear Chair by Jurgen Bey and the Endless Flow Chair by Dirk Vander Kooij. The models are all produced to scale (1:6) and 3D printed (in white polyamide), so that equivalences and diversity of form are more easily apparent. Dutch Design (Doll) House is a meters-high contemporary doll house. On view inside are scale models of Dutch design gems by designers and artists such as Petra Blaisse (Inside Outside), Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe, Ineke Hans, Richard Hutten, Claudy Jongstra, Krijn de Koning, Kossmann.dejong, Makkink & Bey, Scholten & Baijings, Aam Solleveld and Edward van Vliet.
