Taking notes and writing down reminders is certainly a good way to get organized. But it’s no good if all you have scraps of paper floating around the house. Here’s a solution to keep your notes and family announcements organized and easy to see. It’s a simple DIY magnetic message board you can make with just a few simple materials. Hang it in an high traffic area, like the garage or kitchen, so you’ll always be reminded of what you need to remember. It’s fun to make, too. Just follow these step-by-step instructions. Materials for the DIY Magnetic Message Board: Total cost: About $50 (not including the optional MDF backer board) First, cut your moulding pieces down to size. I wanted my moulding pieces to fit together at 45-degree angles, the way a picture frame would. A miter saw is the tool for this job, allowing for smooth, angled cuts. I used my father-in-law’s table saw to make the cuts (you see his hand in the photo above), but a simple miter box and hand saw would do the trick, too.
I cut the moulding down based on the 12-inch x 12-inch size of the steel sheet. You’ll want the moulding to extend just a bit beyond the edge of the the steel. Do to that, I cut the moulding at 12 ¼ inches at the inside, short end of the the 45-degree angle, and 12 ¾ inches at the outside, long end of the angle. Next, I simply stained the cut moulding pieces in a nice black Varathane stain. While waiting for the stain to dry, I glued magnets to the ends of my drawer pulls. I really liked the contrast of the black stain and the natural wood drawer pulls, so I decided not to stain them. Next, glue the frame pieces to your steel board. Be sure to glue the corners really well! I love the final look of this easy DIY project. The black rope wood and the natural wood magnets in varied sizes look great together, and the potential to never again forget my grocery list is really exciting!
