Firefighters were dispatched to the Carlson Place residence at 17 Nelson Avenue in response to an automatic fire alarm received from the three-story structure.
It was about 32 degrees when they arrived, and they encountered the residents on the front lawn, most of whom ran outside without coats. One man had only socks on his feet. The firefighters were able to contain the fire to the mattress in a room on the first floor, but heavy smoke spread throughout the building, according to Deputy Chief Todd M. Smith. A search of the building found one resident had remained inside. She was transported by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital. When it became apparent the building could not be immediately reoccupied, the residents were placed inside ambulances and three Fire Dept. vehicles, including a small bus, to stay warm. Paramedics also brought a stack of blankets from Norwalk Hospital. Representatives from the city's building and health departments and the Fire Marshal's office inspected the structure to decide whether the residents could return. According to the Fire Marshal's office, the building was declared unfit for occupancy when it was found the fire alarm system's horns were not functioning.

With two parents who were watching, clearly they were not guests at the hotel. It was very inconvenient, no one mentioned anything at a check in. It was very disturbing.
