Adam Giles branded 'dumb' for Chinese port deal amid calls for US to explain secret polling Chinese Government reassures Australia over Darwin Port lease Xenophobia 'part of the Australian spirit', Giles says The Northern Territory Government has ruled out developing a luxury hotel on a park beside Darwin's open-air cinema and says it is negotiating with Chinese company Landbridge over the proposal at a new site. The Deckchair Cinema had warned such a development in close proximity would threaten its operations and destroy public parkland.

NT Chief Minister Adam Giles said Cabinet has decided to negotiate exclusively with Landbridge, which was awarded a 99-year management lease over Darwin's port in 2015, on its hotel proposal. But Mr Giles said the Government would negotiate for the development to be on the vacant site that developer Toga recently relinquished — and not Jervois Park, which is adjacent to the cinema."We've got a good proposal that we can sit down and negotiate with over the next week or so," Mr Giles said."We should be able to get to a position where we can have the development of a six-star hotel, but also protects our park."We always knew we wanted Jervois Park to remain as a park. I mean that's fundamentally what parks are there for, they're there for the people," he said.Mr Giles said he believed discussions had "got to a point where we think we've got a pretty good product. It's not finalised yet but we'll now be able to negotiate". The hotel proposal at Jervois Park threatened the operation of the open-air cinema.

He said the Government would ensure the Landbridge development would be truly six star."I think the classification of a six-star hotel is something that's held in proprietary in the name. But a hotel of upper level luxury, I think, is something that's missing as part of Darwin's landscape of hotel accommodation services."What that will help us do is help meet the demands of a growing tourism industry."John Schier, chairman of the Darwin Film Society, which operates the cinema, said he was relieved at the news."There's a good healthy buffer between the lovely green park between the two of us, probably room for a nice walkway along there."Who knows, in years to come we might be able to call on some of those guests from the hotel to attend the Deckchair."The Deckchair Cinema has been at its current location since 2003.The government deal with Landbridge was criticised by some who said Chinese control of Darwin's main port could compromise Australian national security. But Australian Strategic Policy Institute executive director Peter Jennings, who had previously raised concerns over the lease, said government approval was a sign authorities had cleared any commercial development."

I don't see that there is any basis to make a national security complaint about the construction of a hotel if a decision was taken at state and territory government level that there was no national security problem."THE Territory government will offer 9000 square metres of undeveloped land adjoining the Deckchair Cinema as the preferred site for Darwin’s first six-star hotel. In a major government push for Asian capital, Business Minister Peter Styles and a trade delegation has been meeting in Beijing this week with potential hotel investors and will today open up expressions of interest at the Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific in Hong Kong.Investors will be told the Government envisions 50 to 80 rooms of a quality to attract the world’s wealthiest businesspeople and travellers.A key feature of the sales pitch is the offer of crown land around Darwin, but investors can propose alternatives. The proposed site at Lot 10176 fronts the water at the corner of Kitchener Drive and Jervois Rd, in between the Deckchair Cinema grounds and the waterfront area.
