Pebbles form when existing rocks are naturally eroded to the surface of the earth and sink to the Earth's surface before settling on the surface. Pebbles typically consist of pieces of metamorphic, igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been damaged through exposure to atmospheric and water as well as glaciers; when this process completes they shrink to the granules (2 to 4 millimeters in diameter) yet bigger than the cobbles (6-to 64-millimeter diameter).
Pebble sizes and shapes vary greatly based on geological environment and the rock formation process but they can be everywhere in the globe. They are typically found in sandy beaches and river beds. Pebbles are a key element in reducing coastal erosion, while providing habitats to plants and animals alike.
When you collect pebbles, make sure to bring a small container, pencil or pen, paper and notepad to record each pebble as well as handheld lenses and maybe hammers or chisels (for the most advanced collection enthusiasts only). Before you begin your journey make sure you check local laws for legality before taking pebbles from beaches.
