It is bring their own digital device to school as part of their required stationery for learning. It is also highly recommended that at years 11 - 13, students bring their own device to support and enhance their learning. Today's world is digital. Young people access much of their world digitally, and bringing their own device to school for learning helps prepare them for this digital world as well as enhance the learning opportunities, resources, tools and communities that they can access. The use of devices will vary from one class to another.
The use of devices is just one way of accessing learning, and teachers may choose to not use digital devices in a lesson. Students' use of digital devices in a class is at the discretion of their teacher. Click on the link below to reset your GDC password. As technology is evolving and changing, we review our requirements and recommendations each year as we wish to give parents the opportunity to purchase a device that will best support student learning and last for the majority (if not all) of their son's/daughter's time at the college. To assist parents and caregivers in buying a suitable device (laptop) at an educational discount, the college has forged relationship with PB Technologies. This relationship does not stop students from buying devices elsewhere. We have worked closely with PB Technologies to recommend two tiers of devices as follows: Tier 1: These devices will support learning in all years 9 and 10 courses, and most years 11 to 13 courses except for specialist subjects such as Media Studies, Photography.
Tier 2: These are more powerful devices to support specialist software such as Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. While the school provides some high-end devices for student use at school, buying a Tier 2 device will allow your child to accelerate their learning in specialist areas on their own device both at home and at school. The ability to write or draw on a device helps students to show their thinking and creativity more, especially in subjects such as technology, mathematics, sciences and the arts. Please note that we recommend you avoid the following devices: Chromebooks ... these lack a full operating system and may not run certain software or applications in class. iPads and Android tablets ... these are increasingly popular but may not run some software.
Smartphones ... these are great for surfing the web, taking photos and communicating, BUT they are less effective, especially when doing word processing, spreadsheets, etc. Students' devices should have the following software intalled on their devices: Microsoft Office 365 (NOTE: this is free for students ... see information below) Abode Acrobat Reader XI/DC (free download) Free Microsoft Office Software for Students' Personal Device Under the school's licensing agreement with Microsoft, students and staff may download and install the Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus software suite for PC and/or Mac on up to 15 different personal devices using their school email address. Click here to download your free Microsoft Office software. G Suite for Education All students are provided with a G Suite for Education account. This service includes both a Google Mail account and a Google Drive account. This service is provided free of charge for the duration of each student's enrolment at the college.
All school related email communications are sent to this Google Mail account. Google Drive provides students with 25 GB of online file storage, the ability to collaborate with teachers and peers and online access to software applications like word processing, presentations, drawing, etc. Cybersafety & Digital Citizenship At Glendowie College we emphasise 'respectful relationships' across the school, and this includes online. Student and staff behaviour online is covered by school rules - including behaviour out of school hours if it affects the learning or wellbeing of other students or staff. All students and students must complete the college's CyberSafety Student User Agreement when enrolled or working at the college. Students' agreement must be signed by both the student and the parent/caregiver. This agreement encompasses all use of the college's ICT facilities, network and online spaces. It covers student and staff online behaviour both during and out of school hours.
Cybersafety and Digital Citizenship are discussed with students through their studies at the college, especially in Year 9. Safety and Security of Devices Glendowie College is not liable or responsible for the damage, loss or theft of a personal student device. Although the school will investigate incidents related to device damage, loss and theft, the device is the responsibility of the student. It is advised that devices are covered by personal insurance policies for loss and theft, that they are kept in and/or protected by an appropriate case, sleeve or protective cover, and that they are clearly named. Parents should check with their insurance company to determine the level of cover under existing insurance policies. Technological Problems, Repair and Maintenance Glendowie College staff are not responsible for the technical aspects of device use, repair or maintenance. This includes all teaching, ICT and support staff. Any IT support will be limited to verbal and/or written instructions on troubleshooting common problems, such as connecting to the wireless network.
Teaching, ICT and support staff will have a strictly ‘hands off’ policy due to liability issues. Any technical problems, repairs and maintenance issues are the responsibility of the student. The Tech Busters is a community service student team that are available to provide ICT technical assistance to both students and staff. The Tech Busters meet in the Room 29 computer lab every Tuesday during lunch. This team can provide assistance with connecting personal devices to the school's Wi Fi access, tutorials on using Google Mail and Google Drive and other ICT related assistance as needed. Students interested in joining the Tech Buster team should speak to Ms. Mercer or any of the team members. Year 9 ICT Induction All Year 9 students attend an ICT and Internet safety presentation early in Term 1. The school’s ICT Manager (Vicki Mercer) and the student ICT team (the Tech Busters) discuss issues concerning safety on the Internet, appropriate use of the school’s computers, network and Internet access, and ICT related school procedures.
