GETTY Inmates at just ONE prison have made 70 compensation claims totalling £200,000 in the last two years, most for injuries while in custody. The payouts at Cardiff Prison involve lags who say they were hurt after falling out of their beds. The Ministry of Justice has come under fire after officials said many of the claims could be prevented by easing overcrowded cells. Stretched resources mean two prisoners are forced to sleep on bunk beds in a cell made for one. The POA are disappointed that so many frivolous and avoidable claims that impact on taxpayers' money are settled without challenge
A spokesman for the Prison Officer’s Association said: "The POA are disappointed that so many frivolous and avoidable claims that impact on taxpayers' money are settled without challenge."Many claims have involved prisoners alleging injury from falling out of a bunk bed in a cell designed for one prisoner that actually houses two."All too regularly our employer pays a prisoner compensation without a legal challenge being mounted, all in the name of cost-cutting. "If our employer listened to this unions' concerns about overcrowding, then these expense-heavy claims could be avoided."Until our employer begins to listen to our concerns, the hard-working taxpayer will continue to contribute towards criminals receiving compensation for dubious reasons."Payouts range between £8,500 to just £5.50, with 67 per cent relating to compensation for injuries. Other claims include lost property and damage to possessions, totalling £199,431. GETTY Jonathan Isaby, from the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “It’s crucial prisoners are looked after to protect taxpayers from compensation culture.”
