He also has served as a reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences. Dr. Shen has published 700 articles in journals and proceedings of international conferences. He is the recipient of the title of SJTU Top Ten Research Elite (1994), best paper awards (1993,2001,2003,2005,2007), and the most cited paper award (2007). (Medical simulation environment for multidisciplinary team assessment and training) Staff: Michael Pfandler, MSc. (contact), Dr. Matthias Weigl (project management) Background: The research group at the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality (CAMP) at the Technische Universität München (TUM) are developing a virtual-reality simulator for medical procedures. This simulator will assess and train technical as well as non-technical skills of surgical teams. The research is supported and facilitated through the Institute for Emergency Medicine and Management in Medicine (INM) and the Institute and Outpatient Clinic for Occupational, Social, and Environmental Medicine (Group Applied Medicine and Psychology at Work, AMPA) at the Klinikum der Universität München (KUM). Aims: Our Aim is to develop a virtual-reality based environment for simulations of vertebro- and kyphoplasty and to evaluate this environment in a multi-disciplinary team setting. As special feature besides application in team settings non-technical skills throughout the procedure will be evaluated.




This is an innovative approach consolidating aspects of information technology, psychology and learning theory. Methods: The process and therefore the used methods are divided into four phases: 1)     Identification of demands and data acquisition for the development and the design of the simulator 2)     Development and evaluation of the simulator 3)     Trainingsstudy in a single-setting (simulationstudy 1) 4)     Trainingsstudy in a team-setting (simulationstudy 2) Ad 1) To design the simulator general information about the vertebro- and kyphoplasty procedures are obtained in a first step. Following medical expert knowledge is collected through Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA). Ad 2) With this knowledge CAMP will develope the simulation environment which will be brought to perfection by help of medical experts. Therefore AMPA will use a Think-Aloud-Protocol with the participating medical experts. Ad 3) The study in a single setting is used to obtain face, construct and content validity.




Therefore 10 medical experts and 10 novices will perform the simulated procedure with a standardised OR-team twice. The first run will be a routine procedure while the second one will include a crisis scenario. Ad 4) The second study will be conducted in a team-setting. Once more face, construct and content validity will be obtained. Therefore 25 OR-teams will perform the simulated procedure three times. The first 2 runs are similar to the single-setting study. Afterwards a team debriefing is conducted followed by another crisis scenario. [Link to the press release of the INM] First Findings will be available 2016Yesterday, I finally got the chance to test the Augmented Reality see-through head mounted display Microsoft Hololens at the open day event of the Navigated Augmented Reality Visualization System (NARVIS) Lab, a research laboratory the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality, TUM and the Klinik für Allgemeine, Unfall-, Hand- und Plastische Chirurgie, LMU in Munich, Germany.




I have to say that my expectations were not too big. First, because I knew that it is an optical see-through device, i.e. you see through some semi-transparent glasses the real part while the virtual part is projected onto this glass layer. This does not allow for seamless integration of virtual objects into the real environment and reduces the effect of immersion into the Augmented Reality scene. Second, because I was really disappointed by Google Glass. But I have to say, the live test with the Hololens definitively made me happy. The Hololens is light-weight and looks stable and also quite stylish. It is more comfortable than any other stereo head worn AR device that I have tried before (mostly prototypes in a research phase of course) – also when been worn for a longer period in time. The virtual 3D objects are indeed semi-transparent, so it is different as shown in the demo videos presenting also completely opaque objects. But the robustness of registering virtual objects is really great.




The virtual object stays at its designated position in space without any jittering. No noticeable time lag, which would cause a delay and swimming object in space. This my of course change once more complex scenes need to be rendered. The effect of semi-transparency that I had in mind before the test, finally lost its presence. Actually, I did not notice the effect anymore after a while. I need to do further testing on this once demos are available that allow to look through real objects, e.g. through a wall or through the skin of the patient. Then I noticed that I can use my fingers and hands to interact with the AR scene using gestures. With a certain gesture the system was able to show the reconstructed virtual objects of my surrounding environment and made the power of sensors of the device and huge amount of spatial information that is collected by the device in real time impressively visible. I’m really looking forward to see this device getting into the hands of all those creative people out there.
