PUBLIC PARKING MAP - DOWNTOWN CHATHAM Cape Cod Beach Chair Company launches Great White Shark Apparel Line Monday, June 03, 2013 June 3, 2013 (Chatham, MA) – Summer has unofficially kicked off and there’s officially a new shark in town! Newly launched apparel company Chatham Whites has rolled out a line of shark-themed soft goods on Cape Cod. Based on their signature great white shark logo, the company is introducing a full line of t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, dog gear, and more.  and also in a new showroom located within The Cape Cod Beach Chair Company store in Harwich. The line was launched by Brewster native and Cape entrepreneur Justin Labdon, who is also the owner of the Cape Cod Beach Chair Company and its subsidiary Adventure Chatham. Adventure Chatham is an outdoor recreation company that sells and rents stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and other water gear. The arrival of the great white sharks in Cape waters and the fascination in sharks from beach goers and media propelled Labdon to launch a line of “Chatham Whites” t-shirts in 2010.

The shirts have been a hit with customers ever since, leading Labdon to expand the line for this coming summer. The full line will include adult and children’s t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, visors, dog leashes and dog collars. They also sell a special Chatham Whites Cape Cod Beach Chair. “When my 5-year old daughter Zoe spotted someone proudly wearing ‘one of Daddy’s shark shirts’ while we were visiting Boston’s North End one day last fall, I realized just how popular Chatham Whites had become,” remarked Labdon. “I had thought for many years of spinning it off into its own bona-fide business and decided this was the time.” Labdon worked with local graphic designer Amy Smith to fine tune the shark logo graphic. He has successfully filed for a trademark on the Chatham Whites name and logos. All of the items are sourced or made on Cape Cod. Chatham Whites is working with local vendors such as the Cape Cod Belt Company for dog collars and leashes, and Cape Textiles in Sandwich for t-shirt printing.

Chatham Whites will be doing their own embroidery of hats and sweatshirts on premises, using a special process called applique. The line of men’s, women’s and children’s tee’s and sweatshirts feature the signature shark graphic in various colors and patterns. The girls’ apparel features colorful polka dot and rainbow sharks. Other items include a rasta-themed shark with green, yellow and red stripe and an “All American” featuring a shark with stars and stripes. Anticipating this to be a hot seller, Labdon plans to donate $5 from every one of these sold to the development of the Chatham Shark and Marine Life Research Center Foundation. The lines also includes tee’s poking fun at the sharks’ ravenous appetite for the area’s seal population – they read “Seals Taste Like Chicken”. Labdon was recently a speaker at Cape Cod Community College, part of a panel discussion on the Cape Cod Brand with other business leaders and Wendy Northcross of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

He launched the Cape Cod Beach Chair Company in 2003 in his garage and has grown it to a nationally recognized brand. The chairs are shipped world-wide and sold through well-known retailers like Brookstone and Orvis. He launched Adventure Chatham in 2011, capitalizing on the growing popularity of stand up paddle boarding. Chatham Whites retail store will be located in the Cape Cod Beach Chair Company’s 4,000 square-foot store at 1150 Old Queen Anne Road in Harwich. He also expects to market the Chatham Whites line through other Cape Cod retail stores. Next year he plans to open a separate Chatham Whites retail shop on Main Street in Chatham. What does he think about the actual great white sharks? “It is a double edged sword. I am truly fascinated with them, they are such amazing animals. It is very cool and exciting in a way, and I’d love to go on a shark watching expedition. On the flip side, it is a bit of concern that we have such large and dangerous fish swimming right off shore of many of the Cape’s most popular beaches.

I spent so much time boogie boarding and surfing off Nauset Beach as a kid… I am unfortunately very hesitant about encouraging my own kids to do the same.”At its heart, BuildSomething is all about project plans and the project-building experience.
