Known for its spectacular sunsets and its rich vegetation and beautiful trees, Satara rest camp is situated in one of the best Big 5 game viewing regions of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Satara is the 2nd largest camp (after Skukuza), situated towards the centre of the Kruger National Park, in the middle of grassy savannah country. The camp itself with its thatched African style rondavels has a rustic charm, with a romantic "Colonial Africa" type of atmosphere, making it one of the more popular destinations in the Park. The Kruger Park entrance nearest to Satara is Orpen gate, about 47km away from Satara. its spectacular sunsets, the camp itself is adorned with rich vegetation and beautiful large African savannah country in the Satara region is covered with sweet grazing, with the bushThree dams and six waterholes are found here in close proximity. and the Marula are the dominant tree species. HOW TO GET THERE The Satara rest camp region attracts large herds of antelope and other grazers, followed by their predators. Next to being regarded as one of the best general game viewing areas in the Kruger National Park, The Satara area also has a reputation as one of the best spots in the world to view Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. General game in the area includes Blue wildebeest, Zebra, Waterbuck, Impala, Giraffe, Rhino, Buffalo, and Like all the other camps in the Kruger National Park, Satara rest camp has an abundance of resident birds. Particularly prominent are the Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Burchell’s Starling and the Mourning Dove. open plains to the north of the camp are perhaps the best place in the park to record Montagu's and PallidAt night Giant Eagle, Barn, Scops and Pearlspotted Owls can be seen and heard in camp. The N'wanedzi Pick nick Site (24 km from Satara) is worth visiting. Yellow-bellied Greenbul (Bulbul) and Mocking Cliff-Chat are regulars here, while the Shaft-tailed Whydah




has been seen nearby. In winter, when water levels are low, the site is exceptionally active bird-wise, with many passerines coming to drink and joining the ubiquitous Hamerkop, Green-backed Heron and Great (Great White) and Little Egrets. The closest airport to Satara is Eastgate Airport which is situated at Hoedspruit. Eastgate Airport is approximately 68km away from Orpen Gate. South African Express Airways runs daily scheduled flights between Eastgate Airport and OR Tambo International Airport at Johannesburg and less frequent flights to and from Cape Town.




Satara camp is 48km away from the gate. Allow about 2 hours for the drive to the camp, however if you want to enjoy the game viewing possibilities give yourself more time! Travelling from Johannesburg or Pretoria, take the N1 toll-road, direction Nelspruit. Take the R540 turn off at Belfast,At Lydenburg turn left onto the R36 heading north. 20km past Ohrigstad you turn right turn right onto the R531 and head to the Orpen gate. Allow between 4 to 5 hours for the trip to Orpen gate.
