There seem to be several places that rent entire stoves, but I'd rather use my own stove and just buy the fuel...
I'm on a different island, but our Walmart carries them; I would think the Kaua'i Walmart does too. I don't think we on the Big Island even have a sporting goods store! So different from California where I grew up and there were lots of stores like that. Here it is Walmart, Kmart, and now Target. We do have dedicated fishing supplies store. I've seen them at Walmart, Kmart and Ace Hardware in Lihue near the airport, Kapaa, and Princeville. One of our key businesses. jebett, the island only got Target less than a year ago, and Kona side, so I've only been once. Ground has just been broken for the Hilo Target. If we're getting two, surely Kaua'i will get one? I have not checked recently, but the last I saw, the Kaua'i big-box stores (K-Mart & WalMart) DO NOT have the small gas canisters, only the large Colman propane.
All have white gas if you manage to get a fuel bottle on the plane (been there, done that, had to thow out the bottle). The only place I know for certain that carries backpacking stove fuel is Kayak Kaua'i in Hanalei--and even then I'm not sure they have anything but the IsoPro canisters (and the 8oz ones at that). They carry a small selection of backpacking gear for those who hike or paddle to Kalalau. Peddle'n'Paddle might have similar gear, but I haven't been in their store to see. Google their phone numbers and give them a call. I'd also call your airline about bringing a stove. I believe FAA regulations allow them, but each airline has different policies. Liquid gas stoves are worse, the bottles are not allowed even if they have no gas fumes, and the stoves always smell like gas. When you show up with a backpack, they used to ask if you had fuel and stoves. Sad to say, but this is why those places rent the whole stoves. The thrust of my comment was that sporting goods stores aren't common here like they are on the mainland. This is Kaua'i Hiker's area of expertise. I mentioned Walmart as a possible because when I bought a camp stove at Walmart last summer I noted they have some fuel, so it was the best I had to offer, not an assurance.Kayak Kaua'i does appear to have 8oz MSR Isopro canisters. Not ideal, but those will fit (standard Lindal valve) -- assuming TSA doesn't confiscate the rest of the stove :-) Edited: 8:36 pm, March 17, 2010 Since I was heading S and W from Kapaa and didn't want to drive up N for a gas canister, I ended up getting a sterno at the Ace Hardware in Lihue. Kind of fit under my Jetboil and got water to boil in 15-30 min (might not be that lucky at higher elevations and in colder climates).
