The logic board went up and I was not going to spend over $100 to replace it, so I decided to purchase a new opener. After researching several brands, I chose the Sommer and I am very happy with it.
Upon receiving the Sommer, I pre-installed the unit on my workbench according to the instructions. Then the next day, I removed the Chamberlain unit, the chain belt, all wiring, and sensors. This and the installation of the Sommer took about 2 hours and went smoothly. When everything was in place and connected, I then set about programming the two (2) remote controls. This was accomplished in less than 2 minutes. I did have a problem with the wall unit, but it was dinner time, so I left it as is for the night. The following day I saw where I had inserted one of the wires into the wrong sockets. Once that was corrected, it worked flawlessly.I also purchased the SOMMER Wireless Keyless Keypad for Direct Drive Garage Door Opener but had misplaced the instructions. I sent an e-mail to the Sommer-USA company and received a phone call back less than an hour later. One of their technicians walked me through programming the unit in less than 2 minutes. It works well and am enjoying using it.In researching the Sommer, I did read some negative comments about it being "slow opening."
It is a bit slower than other units, i.e. Genie, Chamberlain, or Sears but it is a very minor inconvenience. The quietness easily makes up for it being a bit slower as does the LIFETIME warranty.I have had it for a month now and am very happy with my decision. All things are "possible" but in this case not practical. Some major engineering would be required. Is this slower than. Yes it's a bit slower than my belt drive opener I had. You can speed it up a bit with onboard settings by turning off "soft start & soft shut". I feel the slightly slower speed is worth it for the overall quality and quietness of the unit. I did not use the Direct Drive wall unit and used a doorbell switch. If I already have an existing single piece rail previously installed for a Craftsman will it be compatible or better to use? No, the rail is completely different then the craftsman. If you have it installed then you can take the old one down or just let the installer do it. It is of no use. Does the homelink have learning feature?I would contact manufacturer
