The Pilates Center's Teacher Training Program has been called, "The Harvard of Pilates … Pilates is a series of movements designed to strengthen your core muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance the mind-body connection. Practicing Pilates requires you to shift your attention inward and deepen your breath, which helps promote relaxation. Your core muscles provide support and stability to your spine and pelvis. Strengthening your core can help with back pain and improve your posture. A strong core helps with balance and can improve athletic performance by promoting more efficient functional movement. Julia Naftulin believes that Pilates is for everyone. Her practice is about much more than looking good – it’s about feeling strong and healthy. Julia came to Pilates as a dancer looking for a way to manage her own chronic back pain. As a result, Julia’s perspective on Pilates focuses on the rehabilitative elements of Pilates, while also giving her students a great workout.

Julia has been teaching Pilates since 2003. She earned a Masters Degree in Movement Therapy from Drexel University in 2007. She’s taught at Studio 34 since the studio’s first days, and has loved watching Studio 34 evolve into what it is today. Julia’s group classes, which emphasize flexibility, core-strengthening, and mind-body connection will use the mat and small equipment. Private sessions, which are tailored to individual needs and goals, will include specialized equipment such as the Wunda Chair, Reformer, and Cadillac.See the classes page for times. While the Pilates world is growing, Pilates equipment is shrinking, as practitioners increasingly opt to do their workouts at home.Traditional Pilates exercise equipment -- Cadillacs and Reformers -- are bedlike contraptions with sliding cushions and a variety of spring-loaded straps and bars that offer resistance to work the deep abdominals and the muscles closest to the spine. They are bulky and impossible to store in all but the most spacious homes. But some newer models are more compact or foldable. And now some Pilates equipment is designed to double as furniture. Ellie Herman, an instructor in San Francisco who is opening a studio in Brooklyn this fall, created a vertical version of Pilates called Walk-ilates, which uses MBT's. "I used to use 'wobbly shoes' in classes," which were Birkenstockson a ball, to teach proper balance, she said. Wobbly shoes make exercisers engage their core for stability.Pilates practitioners put one foot on each of these birchwood discs, then rotate their toes outward to get a deep stretch in their hips.

(The discs have a slip-proof surface and ball-bearing rotation that allows them to turn.) They can also be used in combination with a Cadillac machine. This machine weighs 70 pounds (which is actually light for a Reformer), but it is easily storable in a closet or under the bed. An instructional DVD is included. This chair can be used for routine exercises like sideways pull-ups and upside down pushups, and then converted into an everyday chair. Pair it with Peak Pilates's Euro-Style Day Couch, a Reformer that can pass as asmall day bed, and you can furnish a room. This three-inone machine enables you to do all the Pilates exercises you would do on a Reformer, a Cadillac and a floor mat. Although you will need a walk-in closet or spare room to store this hefty machine,it is easy to fold and unfold. These colorful half-domes are used to improve coordination. You can sit on them while doing teasers (a basic position that involves balancing on your bottom, legs stretched at a forty-five degreeangle from the floor).
