The awesome Lego Dimensions just received an update that adds a new feature called “Hire-A-Hero”.  The feature allows players to basically try out a character that they do not own for 30 seconds at a time.

Players can activate this by going to a hint stone and spending 50,000 studs. Here is what the in game message had to say about the feature. The Hire-A-Hero update is now live! Sample a selection of Wave 1 characters by choosing the hologram minifig near certain hint stones. Use your studs to unlock these Lego Dimensions characters for 30 seconds each time. Try out their abilities to solve problems  and complete puzzles. While this is a nifty feature that will surely please some people looking into getting the game, I have some doubts about the “Hire-A-Hero” feature. The Toys-For-Life genre thrives off of players buying new figures in order to experience most of what the game has to offer. In the case of the Skylanders series, players needed to purchase new elemental figures in order to walk through certain doors and complete specific challenges. Having played through those games multiple times, there were many instances of skipping over areas. I just didn’t have the character that was required.

Fortunately, I would buy one or two figures a month in order to check out these areas. Plus new figures brought gameplay changes as well which made the purchase worth it. Lego Dimensions follows that similar format. The game comes with Batman, Gandalf, the Batmobile and Wydlstyle from The Lego Movie. If you want any other character, they must be purchased at a store. There are characters from The Simpsons, The Lord of the Rings, Portal, Back to the Future, Jurassic World, Scooby-Doo, DC Comics, and more available at the moment. A lot of these characters bring diversity, their unique personality and new skill sets to the table. Additionally, the voice cast for the game is impressive and the character’s reflect that. My problem with the “Hire-A-Hero” feature is that it seems to undermine the entire purpose of the game. Being able to use in game currency to “rent” these characters isn’t fair to the people who went out and purchased all of these figures. A staple of the genre was the need to buy new figures.

Now that we are able to use characters we don’t own at the expense of some studs, what is the point of going to a local video game store and buying a character or team pack? Sure, the level packs are still useful in order to open up a hub world, but now most Lego Dimensions players will have no reason to expand their collection. Buying a game such as Lego Dimensions, Disney Infinity and Skylanders comes with a precedent where owners understand that they will need to be buying more characters. These games obviously sell well in order to justify developing multiple sequels so why change the format so suddenly? I really enjoy these games. I was originally skeptical about Skylanders since I lacked knowledge about the characters in the game. After finally playing the game, I quickly fell in love with the genre. Lego Dimensions is one of the best and most unique gaming experiences of the year. It features some interesting and highly satisfying mashups that will please fans of various IPs.

There is even a Portal level that gives us some more time with GLaDOS and that is worth the price of admission alone. The gameplay variety, level diversity and humor constantly keep Lego Dimensions moving. My biggest concern regarding the “Hire-A-Hero” feature is that it may negatively impact the sales for the property. Sure, this feature can actually get more people (who don’t want to buy figures) to give Lego Dimensions a chance, but what will that mean for the various packs that are available for the game? If given the option to not need to purchase more characters, will sales numbers suffer? Will the company decide to not make additional sets after the upcoming wave? We don’t know at the moment, but I can’t stop thinking about how bad this feature is for players of the game. I was perfectly content on buying more figures to expand my collection. Now, I feel like “Hire-A-Hero” is tarnishing the game’s reputation and purpose. Gamers may be happy about the latest update, and while it’s an interesting concept, I think that it will ultimately have a negative impact on the game as a whole.
