This weekend, the Air Jordan 2 Low returns in a far-from-original all-red execution. While the colorway continues to come out across a variety of shoes, not every execution has been a solid one. We took a look through the archives since the “Red October” Nike Air Yeezy II released and assembled the highlights and lowlights of all red everything by Nike. Which one if your favorite? Which is the most foul?  Let us know on social media at @nicekicks across all platforms. The Nike Air Max Plus seems to never come around enough for Stateside AMP heads.  No matter what lengths one would have to go to grab these though, it is worth the hunt. Kevin Durant went nearly all red everything with the “Global Game” Nike KD7, but frankly, these were the sleeper that many passed on. Tiempo tooling set the shoe a blaze along with the very untraditional upper. The Nike Sock Dart was one of the hottest shoes for NikeLab heads last year and these were on the list for many fans of the 2004 runner.

Who said Forces are dead? Just make them all red! To date, Nike has released three Foamposite Pros that seemed to take inspiration from each iconic Yeezy colorway. Whether anyone in Beaverton admits it or not, Yeezy taught you with these Foams. Yeezy taught you well.All-red sneakers became an undeniable trend in 2013, and it took off because there were so many great releases with sneakers splashed completely (or almost) in this fiery shade. It's hard to track exactly where this trend came from, but all-red sneakers have been bubbling in high fashion for quite some time, and they finally transferred over to the average sneaker enthusiast. Kanye was seen wearing all-red sneakers for a good portion of the year. Between his Nike Air Yeezy II "Red Octobers" and an all-red pair of Air Max 90s, his feet were dripped in monochromatic flames. But other brands got in on the trend, too. ASICS released a pair of GT-IIs with a red upper thanks to some folks down in Australia, and even Reebok and New Balance released literal heat.

To be fair, when we say "all-red sneakers," the sneakers don't have to be 100-percent red. Accent colors such as white midsoles or hits of black or grey still constitute an "all-red sneaker," as long as the upper is predominately red. That’s partly because of their association to the supernova of style influence that is Kanye West, and partly because they marked the end of his run at Nike before moving to Adidas. But they were also so sought after because of their eye-catching all-red colorway, a fresh take for a market dominated by white, black, and gray. Yet almost two years after the Red Octobers first debuted, red-on-red kicks have become more a scarlet letter of hype-beasting than a fresh style move.Leading up to the release of the Air Yeezy 2, Nike dropped an all-red version of their classic Air Max 90 to fuel anticipation. And in the wake of the Red October’s release, Nike has unveiled numerous all-red sneakers to capitalize on the Yeezy 2’s success (exhibits A and B).

But what started as a unique twist on a classic look became a feeding frenzy among sneaker brands looking to increase their cultural cachet. Even Nike’s biggest competitors have jumped on the bandwagon. Adidas (West’s current fashion home) now sells all-red Stan Smiths and Superstars, and you can even pick up red versions of classic Vans if you so please. Last year, Timberland, the brand that lives and dies by tan, dropped an all-red version of their 6" work boot. And, take one look around sneaker boutiques like Kith or Sneakerboy these days and you’ll feel like you’re in The Shining. This spring and summer, we say resist the urge to follow the herd. This isn’t just a case of avoiding public embarrassment, either—all-red sneakers simply do the rest of your outfit a disservice. They’re like the bratty little brother of the footwear family, always screaming for attention. At the end of the day, style is about balance, and that much bright-ass red on your feet makes you bottom heavy.
