Our hearts are breaking for the family of Leonardo Sanchez, who was only one year old when he suffocated underneath a bean bag chair while at his childcare center in West Jordan, Utah. The little boy had been hiding under the chair when one of the West Jordan Child Center employees sat down on the bag and began reading to the other children. — CBS Sacramento CBS13 (@CBSSacramento) September 13, 2016 Little Leo was found unconscious 10 to 15 minutes after he had been sat on, and was given CPR before being rushed to the hospital, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. “It just baffles me, makes me wonder, she must not have felt him, she must not have heard him,” Danielle Sanchez, Leonardo’s mother, told Fox 13. “It’s a tragedy what happened. It’s rough because you don’t know when the last time is you are going to hold your child.” A police-issued statement revealed that, according to “everything” they’ve seen, the employee did not know the youngster was under the bean bag when she sat down on it.
Even so, that doesn’t make things any easier for Leonardo’s family. “How could this happen? He’s a big boy. How did they lose track of him?” Danielle said to KUTV, adding, “Somebody dropped the ball, and now we’re going to have to bury a boy because of that.” The daycare center, which has been in violation twice in the past five years, released a statement regarding the child’s death. “We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our daycare facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel,” the statement read. “And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family. We know the family well, we grieve with them, and we pray that God will provide them the comfort and peace they inevitably will need.” Danielle also revealed that she believes the accident could have been prevented. She’s currently seeking legal representation. And according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family, loved ones are planning to hold funeral services for Leo on Sept. 17, what would have been the boy’s 2nd birthday.
