I've read about having flat tyres when driving on gravel road. So my question is: Are there any recommended car hire companies that has optional insurance which covers for flat tyres?

I was looking at Budget car hire, and in their 'rental guide', it states: Tyre and Glass waiver is EXCLUDED if no theft or collision of the vehicle has occurred. Can someone please explain what it really means? The way I am reading this is that, if you pay for the 'tyre and glass waiver', and in the event of a flat tyre, the waiver does not apply because you are not in a collision. If it is, then what is really the point of paying for this..... I'm also wondering how much it would cost when you do have a flat tyre and when you don't have an appropriate 'tyre waiver'. How much do rental companies typically charge for this? You should be able to find a good hire car company who will offer optional tyre and windscreen cover regardless of how it occurs (except of course for negligent driving). We have used Savanna Car Hire twice and were pleased with their service. Do not have any knowledge of charges for tyre or glass damage sorry. Pretty much all our Namibian rental firms will offer some sort of additional tyre and windscreen cover.

I would say the majority of busted tyres and windscreen chips happen without a collision or theft...generally it is just driving over something sharp, or a stone pinging up as someone passes you. Try Advanced Car Hire, Caprivi Car Hire, Savanna as tryhard mentions above, Okavango Car Hire, Gecko Car Rental. All those are good and offer tyre and windscreen insurance. I find generally with your international companies such as Budget, Avis etc you tend to not get very good insurance coverage. Gemma Dry - Discover Namibia Safaris I think you are reading the T&C slightly wrong. The Tyre and Glass waiver is for accidental damage. It does not apply in the event of "self inflicted" damage. i.e. the car is not stolen and there was no collision with another vehicle.. You caused it, in their eyes, and you pay for it. There is no problem with Flat tyres per se. You get a puncture and you change the wheel, there are often two spares..Then you get the spare fixed at your cost.

Sometimes Hire companies do not like Tyre Repairs they have not done themselves, for obvious reasons, so check with them. However don't expect them to drive many miles to fix it for you. And if of course you drive on a flat or deflated tyre and wreck it, expect to pay for a new Tyre. Same applies to 'stone damage'. They will say you were driving too fast and expect you to pay unless this waiver is very clearly explained. Some of the local firms, Gemma lists a few, are more relaxed about this than Budget. You get what you pay for, However it is perhaps worth mentioning that some less reputable local outfits have a reptation of taking every ounce of blood with their pound of flesh. Thank you all for your replies! I had always thought it is better to go with the big car rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Budget etc) ...But that's probably not the case here.i'm still not so sure that I am reading it wrong... Have a look here: budget.co.za/budgetonline/… Budget surely doesn't state that the tyre and Glass Waiver is for 'accidental damage' at all.

It just doesn't make sense what their policy is stating... I agree that section does not make much sense on its own. They should explain it better. but note this under "Waivers". To me that indicates that if you cause the problem through carelessness or sheer bad luck, the waiver won't save you. They should clarify that in their own interests as well as those of the client.. Hi mfuwe, thanks for pointing that out. I've decided that if I was to rent a car in Namibia, I wouldn't go with Budget. But...do you know what they mean when they say "double liability" with that regard? It's not very clear to me.I don't understand that any more than you do.Double the XS from $X to $XX?

Was it Queen of Hearts or Tweedledum that said "It can mean whatever you want it to mean"? In this context it could well have been the Mad Hatter! Stick with a known respected supplier. I used Advanced through the good offices of Gemma. They were excellent but I believe only rent 4x4s. I think if you research budget on this forum you will see many unhappy reviews. It doesn't mean everyone had an unhappy results, but they are not known for their service and quality. Double liability usually means that the cost is doubled so the repair is paid for and a "penalty" is also paid. I would avoid budget IMO. They justify it by saying there are other costs than just the repair. Hassle and time out of service, etc... I did the same as Mfuwe. Used Gemma and she advised Advanced car hire. Went off just fine for our trip. Using her again with another company this summer (at her recommendation). Hi, it does make sense to use a local agent to make the car hire (and accommodation) bookings for you as they often get much better inclusive deals than you would be able to get by booking direct with the car hire companies.

This applies to tyre & glass cover as well as contract fees, second spare tyres and drop off/ collection fees if applicable. In our experience most of the car hire companies who deal with agents will include all of these free of charge, or for a small extra fee, and the cover is not limited to the car being stolen or in a collision, the tyres & glass are covered regardless of how they are damaged which means more peace of mind for you. The terms & conditions of some hire companies will probably change soon though as tyres & glass repairs are costing them a small fortune over the course of a year with all the small damages on the gravel roads! But we are pushing the companies that we work with to still include tyre & glass cover as we feel it's essential. Will it be nessesary to get the tyre and glass waiver?? Namibia for 21 days Any thoughts on itinerary? Bad experience with Camping Car Hire CC, in Windhoek :( Costs: self drive with tent vs staying in lodges
