Don't hold the button or anything like you think you should (EVERYONE does that, they think they need to press it to disengage). Just extend it a bit more and it will close by itself. I had the same problem the first time around and thought I had broken it, but I don't think you can. There is always just a tiny bit more you can pull it, which makes it unclick.
