But perhaps it is better to honor those who exemplify, through what they are doing in the community, that great person's teachings and spirit. That's the approach taken by today's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner and Monday's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Breakfast, which between them are honoring 17 people and one local organization — the Samaritan House, which will be getting the We Share the Dream Award at the dinner for its more than four decades of helping those recovering from alcohol and drug addictions. The honorees include clergy, educators, volunteers and civic leaders. Some are familiar names, some aren't. They are a diverse group, with diverse interests, but they share a commitment to the idea that grass-roots effort makes communities a better place for everyone to live.

Those honored at the dinner — to take only a few examples — will include Felicia Carroll, the single mother who, after the slaying of her only son, became a victims' rights advocate seeking to, in her words, "right wrongs in cases where people have been discriminated against." Carol Brantley, during her years on the board of the Light House shelter, oversaw a major expansion and redirection of that outstanding program for the homeless. Angela Leimkuhler Moran, the first female tenured professor at the Naval Academy's engineering division, worked to create the STEM Education and Outreach Center, through which midshipmen help reach and engage tomorrow's scientists and engineers. Pastor Jimmy Rollins of i5 Church in Odenton — who likes to say that "need has no color" — has spread the message of diversity and co-founded the first independent youth track club in the county. Those getting awards at the breakfast include Jacqueline Boone Allsup, a former head of the county chapter of the NAACP, an evening hospital supervisor, nursing instructor and longtime advocate for social justice and civil rights.

Alycia Marshall, the department chairwoman for mathematics at Anne Arundel Community College, is being honored for initiating programs to help underserved students, Jackie Skarr for her volunteer work in the Senior Health Insurance Program and Maxwell David Ochs for his work with the Community Action Agency and the Conflict Resolution Center. And on it goes, through more people than we have space to mention.Martin Luther King Jr. might well be proud his words are remembered and his accomplishments are still celebrated. But our guess is that he would be even prouder to know his example is being followed. The honorees at these two events show this is the case.Learn how to select, install, and maintain video, sound, and portable computers. Students will explore networking and security protocols.
