Local Entrepreneur, Tommy Mello, Named Among Top Entrepreneurs in the Valley Under the Age of 35 Tommy Mello, owner of A1 Garage Door Service, was recently named as a top entrepreneur in Arizona under the age of 35. Mello launched A1 Garage Door Service in 2007 and now employs 30 people. Mello attributes his success to a few key business strategies; lean economics and accounting. “I think the biggest mistake that people make when starting a business is not doing the research and picking the hot spots. Also, they have no idea how to analyze the books and learn to cut the fat at all times, which makes the business more money.” said Mello. “Finally, if you’re going into business, pay your people more than the industry average and always be looking to hire better people. When you find great people, make sure they are paid well and remember people do what you inspect not what you expect. You can have a great person but if your not applying pressure, setting goals, and watching them they may never succeed.”
Mello launched A1 with his own capital and had no outside funding. He is proud of this as it enabled him to only make small mistakes along the way instead of large scale ones as he grew the business.
