On this day in 2016, Fidel Castro, the communist revolutionary leader of Cuba, passed away at the age of 90.

With only 78 revolutionaries, the M-26-7 began a campaign of guerrilla warfare against a vastly superior enemy in 1956. The M-26-7 pursued a strategy of armed struggle with cells that sought out confrontation with Batista's army in Cuba’s mountainous countryside.

After two years of guerrilla warfare, Batista fled in 1959, marking the Cuban revolution's triumph. The Cuban guerrilla model sparked a wave of new communist guerrilla organizations, such as the 'Tupamaros' in Uruguay and Colombia's 'National Liberation Army'.
