This is amazing. Whole thing is well worth a read.

A weekend read for those interested in #Lebanon:

Playboy interviewed Walid Jumblatt, the “enigmatic guerilla, scholar and self-avowed war lord” and “the man calling the shots” for their July 1984 issue, 36 years ago. Their journalist met him during peace talks in Switzerland.

2.

Incredible candor. Maybe because he’s addressing an American publication that not many in Lebanon will read, but he’s also got an extremely fatalistic attitude throughout the whole thing, like nothing really matters.

3.

His thoughts on the United States are observant but also—he’s afraid of riding the NYC subway

4.

This really stuck out to me, saying he has his “own approach to god” doesn’t sound like he’s talking about Druze. I wonder if he really believes in that religious tradition or just has his personal spirituality.

5.

Ask again in 35 years Walid

6.

Here he is calling for turning Lebanon into a modern social-democratic economy. Shame that’s all been abandoned now. Robert Fisk may think Jumblatt is still progressive but he helped engineer the postwar neoliberal order and is no different from the rest of them.
