The Fire Nation prince, Zuko went through quite a journey in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here are 10 great cosplays that capture Zuko's fiery nature.
Even for a series that came out nearly two decades ago, Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender has some of the best and most memorable character designs of the generation that grew up watching it. Each of the four nations possessed their own distinct sense of style, and that extended even further when it came to the looks of the main cast. Even after years of not seeing the show, it's still fairly easy to recall the designs of the heroes fans followed throughout their journey.
One of the most memorable has to be Zuko, who also went through the most design changes as he went from a Prince to being banished, going into hiding, and finally teaming up with Aang.
The relationship that ends up blossoming between Zuko and Mai is arguably just as powerful as that of Aang and Katara's, as accepting how powerful her love for Zuko was is an incredibly central part of Mai's character. This is displayed no more perfectly than of this serene shot of Su-rine as a possessive Zuko, and Rianca-Cosplay as a very casual Mai who seems to be perfectly fine with the hand draped over her shoulder.
Both characters' feelings towards each other could be no more clearly represented, and they both look straight out of the show.
Due to the striking difference between the type of people that Zuko and Azula end up being at the end of the series, it's always incredibly powerful to see the two of them together. The proud dominant air that christie-cosplay's Azula holds over sakanamochi's Zuko is palpable, and it's only added to by Azula's expression seeming as if she isn't acknowledging the grumpy, cross-armed older brother at all.
The location they chose for the shot is perfect as well, adding a true feeling of towering above the Fire Nation.
The only thing more impressive than seeing one element captured perfectly on camera is seeing all four of them masterfully recreated. Having Aang and Zuko together in the Air and Fire shots, showing how they were fighting back in the first book but working together to master Firebending by the end, is a wonderful touch that shows the photographer greengreencat really knew what they were doing.
Everything, from the costumes, poses, and expressions to the bending effects, is done so well that it almost leaves one wishing for them to try making a live-action movie.
Regardless of whether Zuko's blades are pointed at the Avatar or against the Fire Nation, they're definitely a force to be reckoned with, and that comes across perfectly in this intense shot of i-artemis-i's Zuko. Every piece of the costume looks wonderfully made, and the cosplayer notes that every bit of it's handmade.
The contacts are perfect for Zuko as well, giving off the same intense aura that he does whenever his gaze steadies on an opponent. Whether a friend or foe, it's clear that it wouldn't be very wise to try to mess with him.
Though their relationship never came to be, to the disappointment of a good number of fans, Katara and Zuko's relationship was still one of understanding. Liv-is-alive makes a wonderful Katara, and Zuko's tenseness as he tries to accept her help is portrayed accurately through Flybike.
As Zuko begins to heal from his past trauma, it's a beautiful sentiment that a gifted and gentle healer like Katara would try her hand at healing the physical reminders of his past.
Although Zuko may not have ended up with Katara , that does not mean fans are not able to pay tribute to what could have been. RenShuher makes an excellent Zuko here, and accompanied by Katara as well as the incredibly atmospheric background, they really feel like they're trying to catch a peaceful moment of rest together while hiding out in the Fire Nation.
Both of their looks are extremely well-done, as they give off an air of being realistic outfits rather than that of costumes. Furthermore, they managed to capture the essence of their characters perfectly through their expressions.
It's great to think that Zuko kept up his masked acts of heroism even after taking over as the Fire Lord, and even better that he would have let Mai in on his little secret. FireLordMai herself uploaded the photo of the two, and they managed to capture Mai's "easily annoyed with anyone who isn't my Zuko" personality, down to the slight scowl and even her cold gaze.
Good thing Zuko's donning his spirit-hero persona at the moment, so he can stop her from doing anything rash.
On their own, Zuko and Mai are both incredibly threatening forces, so putting them together – as well as potentially interrupting them from a quiet, romantic moment together – spells disaster for anyone who happens to get on their nerves. Living up to their name, tntcosplays makes quite the fiery Zuko, looking annoyed alongside his Mai that they were interrupted, who frankly looks even more ready to kill whoever's on the other side of the camera.
Their poses, expressions, and outfits all lend to them seeming like they are coming right out of the show, especially Mai's threatening gaze, while still managing to convey the protective soft side she has for Zuko.
It's incredible how much cosplayers are able to convey about their characters through their makeup and expressions, but that's exactly what juvanixx_project pulled off here. The only thing that makes the shot a little sad is the mere fact that phone cameras tend to flip images, making it look like the scar is on the wrong side, when it's accurate in person.
However, the pure quality of the costume and makeup itself more than makes up for that. Holding a candle so close to such a nasty burn serves as a grim reminder of Zuko's past.
A huge dramatic full-body pose isn't always necessary to get tons of character across, and that's no more clear than in this gorgeous portrait shot of tenshi_senpie's Zuko. His outwardly cold personality that's quick to turn fiery-hot when provoked is portrayed perfectly here, as his stiff pose portrays coldness while there's still a clear fire raging behind those eyes.
The makeup is done perfectly as well, and it'd be better to stay on his good side for fear that he might actually be able to firebend.
