Shop Ad. Trail Talk. Trip Reports. Sun Aug 06, am. I have been on a work trip near Munich, Germany for the past 11 days. During that time, I only had one full day available for exploring the countryside. Unfortunately, we had one driver, one car, and I would need to convince my four co-workers how great it would be to visit the Bavarian Alps and go to Zugspitze, the Germany highpoint. None of these co-workers are peakbaggers, and they each might have their own places that they would want to go. But convincing them that this trip would be a great idea ended up being easier than I expected. One guy was onboard as soon as he heard we could see some castles near the area. Another guy, who was the driver in the group, was onboard as soon as I said there would be opportunities for him to drink beer. Our group designated me the official 'party planner' for Sunday, July 30, and asked me to plan the trip details for the day. I told my co-workers that because this is something I want to do and want to introduce to them, that I insisted on paying for the Zugspitze part of the day so they would not have to worry about the cost. We left Munich in the morning and headed south. As we passed through Garmisch and Grainau, which are Leavenworth-esque towns, we heard 'The Neverending Story' theme song on German radio. None of us had heard that song for years but it seemed like the perfect song for the region. There is typically a direct gondola from the base of the mountain but that cable car line was torn down in recent years and a newer, bigger gondola is currently in construction and is projected to open at the end of this year. I was happy about the current situation because I thought it was fun to ride the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn cogwheel train up the mountain. Our train left at AM and did not waste time climbing up the mountain. This was the steepest train track I had ever been on, and the views were great. The train went through a forest and above treeline, then going into the mountain. The tunnel inside of the mountain is m ' long! Very fun! The train then stops at its upper station, Zugspitzplatt, at m '. From our starting point, the cogwheel train had climbed m ' elevation in only 8. We explored Zugspitzplatt for a while. There is a tiny, old chapel there to visit. We enjoyed free tobogganing down a hill. There are plenty of opportunities for skiing and snowboarding, although the season is now done for those activities at this area. From Zugspitzplatt, there is a great view of the upper slopes of Zugspitze. Climber could be seen in a conga line, looking like ants on an anthill, going up steep, slippery slopes as they ascended the peak. We then took the Gletscherbahn gondola ride to the upper main platform of the mountain, at approximately m '. This is not the true summit but it is the highest point that most people stop. After some exploring and soaking in the views, I continued to the true summit and only one co-worker was willing to go with me. Reaching the true summit is not for the faint at heart. In fact, there is a large sign at the start of the route saying that climbing equipment is needed although it is not really necessary. A fall here would likely be fatal. It was fantastic reaching the true summit. I knew that I had not only reached the highest point of the Bavarian Alps and Germany, but I also had ascended my first country highpoint and an ultra-prominence peak. I was proud of my co-worker Mark, who also reached the summit. I took the lead to direct traffic as best I could, to create a safe, consistent flow for everyone involved. After getting back to the main platform, I had a pretzel and Coca-Cola After our snack break and more photos, we descended from the peak the same way as our ascent gondola and cogwheel train. When we got back to the car, we drove west into Austria. We stopped at a golfing resort for lunch, where we each ate wiener schnitzel. It was very good! From our lunch stop, we had an excellent view of Zugspitze. After lunch, we continued west and then north, passing some castles along the way. Once back into Germany, we went to Schwangau to see two castles, Neuschwanstein Castle a. While at the sites, the inside tours for Neuschwanstein Castle had been sold out but we were able to be in an inside tour of Hohenschwangau Castle, which is actually the older castle of the two. It was great seeing the castle and learning about the various rooms. There were great views of the countryside, as well. This area is a highly recommended place to visit. After leaving the castles, we headed back northeast towards Munich. Shortly after leaving Schwangau, we encountered what seemed like the storm of the century. Winds, rain, hail, and standing water pushed through the region, almost like a hurricane. As a result, it took us much longer to get back to our hotel than we had hoped but we safely got there in the evening. We then worked the remainder of the week, with no time to explore the region any further, so I was very thankful that we had our one-day outing to the Bavarian Alps. Cogwheel train station at Eibsee. Zugspitze on right. Steep train ascent through forested terrain. Eibsee 'Egg Lake' , as seen from the cogwheel train. Train entering tunnel The train reaches treeline. Tunneling deep inside the mountain m. Funny ad at upper train station. Tiny, old chapel at central station. Climbers ascending Zugspitze. They look like ants! Ascending Zugspitze via gondola Looking down the cable car line Construction of new large gondola. Two people on hanging ramps no, thanks! View from upper mountain m. Eibsee below. Well-endowed woodcarving. George R. Martin would be proud. Fantastic view from m. I love the Bavarian Alps. Stegosaurus-like ridge. True summit of Zugspitze. Via ferrata, scrambling, metal ladder, metal ropes. Main platform from above ladder. Co-worker starts final ascent of peak. Main platform from near true summit. My first country highpoint peak complete! Main upper platform from true summit. Our Austrian lunch stop. Zugspitze in background. Hohenschwangau Castle. We toured inside. Neuschwanstein Castle, a. Sun Aug 06, pm. Redwick, thanks for posting this great report on on a cool destination. I've been there several times including on my honeymoon! Nothing like a beer and bratwurst on the deck up there. Last time I walked up from the Austrian town of Ehrwald. It's just a little scrambly, not much different from the Mount Si haystack but with via ferrata cables to make it safer. There are several great hikes that start in Ehrwald if you have more time some day. There is a light rail from Garmisch to get there in about 30 minutes. I can't wait to go back some day. Congratulations on your successful summit bid. Sorry to have not been able to have shared mountain comraderie and a beer with you on this one. The lists are never ending and I too have started to work on country highpoints. In October I will get toe the top of Jordan for my sixth country highpoint. Congrats man, both on the climb and convincing your co-workers to go with you! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. When you register, you get our free weekly -ish snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in Username:- Password:. Or: Register to be a proper snow-head, all official-like! Prev topic :: Next topic. Poster: A snowHead. Does anyone have any recommendations or tips at all please? Likely to do a few days downhill and maybe one cross-country. Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person. PrimroseAndBlue , there is skiing on the Zugspitze Germany's highest mountain which shares a border with Austria and also the Garmisch Classic ski area. Sadly the ski lifts are no longer in operation on the interestingly named Mount W ank the Wankbahn 4 person gondola still operates apparently for walkers, snowshoers and tobogganists only. Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see? Alastair Pink , thank you very much indeed. Looking at the map I see it is mainly blues and reds, any views on the difficulty? You need to Login to know who's really who. PrimroseAndBlue , sorry, I've only ever visited Garmisch-Partenkirchen to watch the ski jumping in the Four Hills Tournament interestingly the buildings there in the spectator area date from the Olympics! Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do. PrimroseAndBlue , Zugspitze us worth visiting if only for the cable car ride, a bit like where eagles dare, or the clog railway through the mountain. The views are spectacular. If I remember correctly the sking was OK with lots off blues and a few challenging runs back to the bottom of the mountain if there is sufficient snow. We stayed in a place that had solid silver cutlery with swastika markings! You'll need to Register first of course. Must do the Kandahar from the top down to the valley at Kreuzeck, which has some quite steep stretches and is just generally one of my favourite high speed hooning runs in the Alps. If you are into off piste then there are a few possibilities off the top of the Alpspitz gondola from Kreuzeck where there is a set of steep couloirs leading down to Hochalm, but Garmisch is not generally known for it's off piste. The other area in Garmisch itself is up on the glacier at the Zugspitze. As has been said, the gondola ride up there is spectacular, and the views from the top are stunning. The pistes are a bit boring, the off piste is great, but only if they have more than 4m of snow I usually go up there end of March or beginning of April. Based in Garmisch with a car you can take a 20 minute drive over to Austria and do Ehrwald, Lermoos and Biberwier. I personally usually end up in Lermoos, but the Ehrwald is definitely worth a visit. For off piste you can take a look at the Dammkar in Mittenwald. This is a free ride area no pistes reached via the Karwendelbahn from Mittenwald. Once you get to the top there is a m walk through a tunnel which pops you out at the top of the Dammkar valley. Follows about 5Km of powder followed by a track which brings you back down to the gondola. You have to check whether the track is skiable all the way, otherwise you end up with a long walk! Further along that way in Austria you can ski in Seefeld, which is also a major cross country center, or you can carry on down to the Inn valley and across to Axams. Definitely worth a visit. Then you can post your own questions or snow reports There are no runs from Zugspitze to the valley. There is a route that can be taken from the top down to Ehrwald, but need to abseil about 60m in the middle! Not standard stuff. If you take the train down then shortly after the tunnel exit there is a stop at Riffelriss, which takes you to an un-pisted route down to the gondola base. Well worth doing, but not always open. Certainly won't be open yet this year. After all it is free. Fabulous, thank you all very much for the tips. You'll get to see more forums and be part of the best ski club on the net. The garmish Classic area has a lot of reds some blue, and two great blacks , the Kandahar is a really good black run if you like a fast challange. The other black is not quite as much of a challange but is good fun. The Zugspitz area has mostly reds , and they are easy reds. If you want some pretty and fairly easy skiing then Ehrwald is a great spot to go. Ski the Net with snowHeads. Going to Zugspitze on Friday the 24th of Jan now! Booked as a good last minute deal I found online and a bit uncertain now whether it was good choice. I'm a boarder and usually things I look for are trees, off piste, black runs, good powder too. Don't think it's a good place for any of those but hey, kicking off the season! By the way my first post ever here at snowheads. Garmisch is for intermediates. Not much snow in the valley today, but plenty uptop. Very pretty area, but spreadout. And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports. Hope you enjoy your trip to Garmisch Partenkirchen! So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much. You know it makes sense. By the way my first post ever here at snowheads You're probably right, but I can think of worse places to be. It's a nice little town with friendly people and lovely cakes. Welcome to. Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:. The town itself has lots of lovely places to eat, but I can recommend the Gasthof Fraundorfer for an evening meal, it is so typically Bavarian, with accordians, wenches serving beer, and back bottom slapping dancers, lot's of fun and the food is good.
