Gabriel Olsen/FilmMagic A star is born! It’s not Oscar-winning Descendants screenwriter Jim Rash, but he was the prophet who ushered in the latest (and leggiest) meme of 2012. The Community star was the first to pay homage to fellow nominee Angelina Jolie, who took no small amount of delight in showing off her exposed right gam (thanks to a velvet Atelier Versace gown) at last night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards. Following Rash’s lead, slew of Inter-nutters have joined the chorus of approval and/or mockery for Jolie’s sartorial statement. The trend began early when a dedicated Twitter feed popped up toward the end of last night’s telecast. The feed has amassed more than 12,000 followers overnight. Most of the tweets are of the “Look at me! Look at me!” variety, but a more recent sentiment — “You have to admit I’m one hell of a leg” — can’t be denied. Within an hour, people were Angelina Jolie-ing , which is kind of like Tebowing — only way sexier. Then the inevitable “legbombing” meme emerged. If you’ve ever idly wondered how Jolie’s lithe limb would have fared while crossing the Delaware with George Washington, the fearless Photoshoppers have you covered! And that’s not all the history the star’s stem has seen: It’s now appearing in Tiananmen Square, on the moon with Neil and Buzz in 1969, breaking bread at the Last Supper, fighting on the front lines of Civil Rights (via a scene from The Help ), and totally there when that cop pepper spread all those Occupy Oakland kids. Thanks, Internet! (Cue the inevitable leg backlash in 3…2…) And, because if a Jolie falls in the forest and Jennifer Aniston isn’t there to hear it… comparisons were made between Jolie’s leggy look and Aniston’s Golden Globes outfit. Is there a style-based street fight a-brewing? In a word, no. What do you think, PopWatchers? Were you as mesmerized by Jolie’s thigh-high slit as the denizens of the Internet, or do you think there was a more meme-able moment during last night’s Oscars? Where do you hope this rabbit hole of a meme will lead next?
