Mihail Mihayloviç Zoşçenko 1895'te doğdu. Babası gezici bir sanatçıydı; evlenmeden önce oyuncu olan annesi hikayeler yazıyordu. Çocuğun kendisi 1907'de "Palto" hikayesini yazdı. 1913'te Mikhail, St. Petersburg Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesine girdi. Ancak Birinci Dünya Savaşı nedeniyle çalışmaları kesintiye uğradı. 1915'te gönüllü olarak cepheye gitti, bir tabura komuta etti ve St. George Şövalyesi oldu. Ancak bu yıllarda bile komik kısa öyküler, hiciv eserleri yazmayı ve asker arkadaşları için epigramlar yazmayı bırakmadı. 1916'da Almanların gaz saldırısına uğradı ve 1917'de terhis edildi, ancak daha sonra göreve döndü. Kendisine dört askeri emir verildi. Ekim Devrimi'nden sonra Zoshchenko, Sovyet iktidarının safına geçti. 1917'den 1919'a kadar birçok mesleği değiştirdi: mahkeme sekreteri, Petrograd askeri limanında katip, hatta marangoz ve ayakkabıcı olarak çalıştı ve poliste görev yaptı. Ve tüm bu yıllar boyunca, Korney Chukovsky'nin liderliğindeki "Dünya Edebiyatı" yayınevindeki edebiyat stüdyosunu ziyaret ederek edebi faaliyetlerle uğraşmaya devam etti. 1921'de Zoshchenko'nun ilk öykü kitabı yayınlandı, ardından “Duygusal Hikayeler”, “Mavi Kitap”, “Tarihsel Hikayeler” vb. koleksiyonları yayınlandı. Pek çok seçkin çağdaş - A. Tolstoy, Y. Olesha, S. Marshak, Y. Tynyanov - Zoshchenko'nun yaratıcılığı çok takdir edildi. Rus edebiyatı için yeni bir kahraman türü yarattı - eğitim almamış, ahlakı kötü ve ilkel bir çevre görüşüne sahip, ancak Vatanseverliğin başlangıcında hayata tam bir katılımcı olmaya çalışan sıradan bir kişi. Savaş sonrasında Zoshchenko, Mosfilm senaryo stüdyosunda çalıştığı Alma-Ata'ya tahliye edildi. 1943 baharında Moskova'ya döndü ve Krokodil dergisinin yayın kurulu üyesiydi. Ağustos 1946'da Zoshchenko'nun çalışmalarının sert bir şekilde eleştirildiği bir Merkez Komite kararı yayınlandı. Yazarlar Birliği üyeliğinden ihraç edildi ve 1953 yılına kadar ağırlıklı olarak çeviri faaliyetleriyle uğraştı. Haziran 1953'te Zoshchenko, Yazarlar Birliği'ne yeniden kabul edildi. Hayatının son yıllarında "Timsah" ve "Ogonyok" dergilerinde çalıştı. Mikhail Zoshchenko, 1958'de Leningrad'da (şimdiki St. Petersburg) ortaokul çağında öldü.
