is it a normal side effect for someone on zoloft who is 16, to not be able to reach orgasm.?????? im really wondering
What you’re experiencing is quite common. Certain antidepressants, including Zoloft and other medications in the family of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may have sexual side effects, including
These side effects tend to increase with higher doses of the medication. Other common brand names for SSRIs include Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, and Prozac. SSRIs are used to treat depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and other conditions, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Some people adjust to the conditions and are able to go without having orgasms. But if you’re experiencing these side effects, it’s important to be open and honest with your health care provider, so that she or he can help you work it out in a way that is most satisfying for you — by changing the type of medication, adjusting the dosage, or making suggestions for how to deal with the side effects.
If you have a sex partner, you might want to tell your partner about the medication’s side effects so she or he understands why you’re experiencing difficulties. Open communication plays a key part in making sex enjoyable and keeping relationships healthy.

Antidepressants Saved My Life and Killed My Orgasms

I started to think my anxiety and detachment were just part of my personality.
Once I started taking medication for my depression, I felt excited about participating in my life again, about my goals and possibilities.

Thanks to Zoloft, it now takes me a really, really, long time to have an orgasm. Sometimes, I don’t at all. And if I do, it’s not even good.
It feels like a terrible cosmic joke that medication to alleviate my depression steals so much joy.

I can’t think of much that's less arousing in the middle of sex than starting a conversation about the side effects of my antidepressants. But this is something I’ve had to do often, usually after my partner asks, “Did you come?” for what feels like the billionth time in a row. (I more than likely haven’t.) Then I know it’s time to have the talk about how my brain makes me sad for no reason, why all the sex things I used to like feel like absolutely nothing, and why, if you're having sex with me, you should probably get comfortable and adjust your neck position, because we’re going to be here for a while.
I’ve struggled with depression and severe anxiety on and off since I was around 13, an age when the more subtle signs of depression like moodiness, irritability, and social withdrawal can easily go undiagnosed since teenagers are often known for being moody, irritable, and sometimes withdrawn.
The adults in my life often wrote my symptoms off as “hormonal,” “typical teen stuff,” and, later, when I was able to see a therapist on my own, a run-of-the-mill teenage crisis that I’d “grow out of.” I tried everything happy people told me would supposedly help: herbal tea, bubble baths, getting a haircut, pretending I was fine, a gluten-free diet , a juice cleanse , yoga, “thinking positive." While some of these things might help turn around a bad day, they won’t do anything when it’s been a bad six to eight months. Unsurprisingly, nothing worked.
I thought maybe I was a sad, boring person who couldn’t be motivated to get it together, no matter how hard I tried. After a while, I didn’t have the energy to try to change. As I entered my 20s, my frequent panic attacks and near-constant negative thoughts about myself were so overwhelming that I could barely get out of bed. All I could hear was the voice in my head telling me, “You’re not smart enough,” “No one loves you,” “You’re a disappointment,” and “You’re ugly,” over and over again until I started to believe these things were true.
I eventually reached the scariest, most dangerous stage of my depression when everything just turned into a gray, mind-numbing boredom. All I could think was, “Give up.” I was beyond sad; I felt nothing.
I spoke with my doctor, who recommended a combination of talk therapy and Zoloft. I was almost 25, and after spending so much of my life feeling like I’d never feel better, I was finally on my way to being properly treated for the first time.
As it happens, I was lucky. I reacted relatively well to the medication, and with the help of my therapist, I started getting better. Zoloft didn’t fix my problems or heal my trauma or “cure” me in any way, but it helped lift me out of the depressed hole I’d fallen into and thought I couldn’t escape.
I could still sometimes hear my brain telling me mean things like, “Your friends are only pretending to like you” or “Everyone’s thinking about that really dumb thing you said.” But now, instead of my brain shouting these thoughts at me, they felt like a faint, annoying buzz I could easily block out. I could go through my day and have feelings and be a person without being crushed by the weight of it all.
I felt like I was being given a new life. It still sucked in the same ways the old one did—I was still broke and bad at dating—only now I didn’t care as much. I was going to be OK. I was also lucky in that I avoided the notorious side effects many antidepressants can cause, like nausea, uncontrollable weight gain, pooping problems, and a worsening of depression symptoms. Well, I avoided most, except the one about sexual dysfunction.
Before Zoloft, I could definitively tell when I’d had an orgasm because, like for most people, orgasms felt good. After Zoloft, they feel like nothing. Sometimes, I’m not even sure if I’ve had one.
I’ve been masturbating since I was around 5 years old, when I discovered that my vagina does really fun things. In dark times, this has always been one of
