Zimbabwe Reportedly Rejects $350 Million US Health Grant Over Sovereignty Concerns

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered an end to negotiations with the US over a proposed health assistance package, local media reported, citing a leaked letter from Albert Chimbindi, Permanent Secretary for Zimbabwe's Foreign Ministry.

Mnangagwa was reportedly concerned about a "clearly unequal memorandum of understanding" that "frankly threatens the sovereignty and independence of Zimbabwe as a state. "

The MoU, promoted by Washington as a framework for US medical aid, included provisions granting Washington direct access to Zimbabwe's health statistics and mineral resources—terms Harare considered unacceptable, according to the report.
