The heterosexual among us will never know the anxiety, fear and anguish some people in the LGBT community feel when grappling with the decision to come out and reveal their sexuality. Though I could understand why Yusaf wouldn’t feel comfortable coming out, having a fiancé and 10 children, there was also a larger part of me that wondered why he just couldn’t be honest with himself and those near him.
Though he says otherwise , I’m convinced Mack’s decision to star in the adult film was less about falling on hard times and more about a way for him to finally live in his truth, even if he had to do it passively. There’s no doubt in my mind that Yusaf knew this video was going to make its rounds.
And while there might have been some weight lifted in his decision to finally be honest about his sexuality, the reaction from those closest to him weren’t always supportive, as he might have assumed.
In a recent interview with a Philadelphia Fox affiliate , Yusaf Mack talked about the hardest conversation he’s had in the two weeks since the tape was released.
He said it was the one he had with his 23-year-old daughter.
Mack says she said, “Kill yourself. You embarrass us.”
Then the interviewer asked him how he responded.
“I just threw the phone down and starting crying. I didn’t have no words, nothing to say. What could I say? ‘Who you talking to like that?!’ She’s got feelings. I’m her dad. All I could say was, “You’re right.” and threw the phone down.”
What makes the situation so tragic is that sometime in the past two weeks, it’s not clear if it was before or after this phone call with his daughter, Mack did think about killing himself. He called a couple of his friends and told them he was considering the feat. One of them came over, sat with him and eventually dissuaded him from the notion.
Today, he says all thoughts of suicide have passed.
Still, Mack, who says he’s known for the past eight years that he was gay, wishes he would have handled the situation differently, particularly with his fiancé, who was with for five years.
“I should have just come out and told her the truth and I’m sorry.”
Mack also had a message for his daughter and his other children.
“To all my kids, I’m sorry and I’m going to still be y’all father regardless, of what I am or who I am.”
I understand that Yusaf’s daughter is going through a helluva lot. Homosexuality aside, no child should have to deal with her father’s porno being the talk of the town. And I pray she hasn’t stumbled across it in any way. Still, despite her hurt, saying something like this to her father, represents the exact reason he kept his lifestyle a secret for so long. I don’t have to tell y’all that telling your father to kill himself is never ok, particularly when he was going through a challenging time in an attempt to be his truest self. Perhaps she didn’t know he was considering suicide but imagine the guilt she would have felt if he’d taken heed to her advice. Words are powerful and it’s a good thing Yusaf followed his friends encouraging ones rather than his daughters.
Hopefully, after she’s had some more time, Yusaf and his daughter will be able to make amends.

There has been yet another turn in the story of a Philadelphia boxer named Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack, who just days ago came out as bisexual after initially claiming he was drugged into performing in a gay porn film.
“I’m gay. I’m tired of holding it in,” Mack told Fox 29 in a new interview taped earlier this week. “It is what it is. I live my life.”
Last week, the 35-year-old self-proclaimed “straight father-of-ten” claimed gay porn producers for The Dog Pound lied to him about the nature of the film and slipped a drug into his drink.
In the new interview, Mack admits that he’s known he was gay for “about eight years” and calls the drug allegations ” a lie… to try to cover myself up.”
Mack says he was “down and out” when he agreed to take part in the film. “I asked friends, they wouldn’t help me, so I did what I had to do.”
When news broke about his involvement in the film, he said he couldn’t “hide it anymore.”
The anxiety led to depression and suicidal thoughts.
“I was hurt. Like to myself. Then I think about my children, like how am I gonna explain this to my children. I called a couple of my friends and told them ’I’m thinking about killing myself.’”
Although Mack says his friends have been supportive of him, his 23-year-old daughter hasn’t been as accepting.
“Kill yourself,” she told her father, “You embarrass us.”
Mack says he threw the phone down when she told him those harsh words. “All I could say was, ‘You’re right.’”
But he’s not letting any of that get him down.
“I’m free, I’m happy,” he said. “The truth is out, and I’m sorry. … You don’t like me or love me, regardless I’m still me. When you see me on the streets, I’m still Yusaf Mack.”

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF)- A week ago the story of professional Philly boxer Yusaf Mack's exploded in the media.
The 35-year old father of 10 claimed he was drugged and forced into doing gay porn.
What did he get for it? Just $4,500.
Now, in the aftermath of scandal Mack's telling a much different story about what he did, and the lies he told to cover up who he is.
FOX 29's Quincy Harris sat down exclusively with Mack to help set the record straight.
Mack began the interview by coming out as gay.
"I'm gay. I'm tired of holding it in, it is what it is. I live my life. I'm gay," Mack explained.
He says he's known the truth about who he is for about 8 years now.
Last week, when it was revealed that Mack appeared in a gay porno, he responded to the allegations by saying he was drugged and forced into doing it.
That was the story he had stuck with until sitting down with FOX 29.
Quincy asked him about the story of being drugged and forced into doing the film, which was shot last year.
"It was all a lie," Mack responded, "To try to cover myself up."
Now, Mack says he remembers the entire experience.
Mack goes on to explain that the tape that came out was the only one he has ever done, and that he simply didn't know when it was going to come out.
When it came out, Mack says he could do nothing to hide the tape, or his true identity any longer.
Once the tape became public, Mack says two things entered his mind; how he would explain it to his children, and suicide.
"I was hurt. Like to myself. Then I think about my children, like how am I gonna explain this to my children," Mack said, "I called a couple of my friends and told them 'I'm thinking about killing myself.'"
While Mack says he no longer wants to kill himself, and that he's free and happy, the backlash from the video was not yet over for him.
Before the video Mack was previously engaged to marry a woman he had been with for five years. He says the two of them were good to each other, but for him, it was a lie. Mack went and told her the truth, and apologized for any pain he had caused her or their children.
Coming out to a woman he was going to marry was tough, but Mack admits that the toughest conversation he's had in the weeks since the tape was revealed was the one he had with his oldest daughter.
Quincy asked Mack what that first conversation with his daughter was like.
"Kill yourself," his daughter said, "You embarrass us."
Mack could say nothing back, and could only break down in tears, and tell her, "You're right," before hanging up.
He tells Quincy that he wants all of his children to know that he is sorry.
As for everyone else Mack feels he lied to or hurt, he has a message for them.
"The truth is I'm sorry. You don't like me or love me, regardless I'm still me. When you see me on the streets, I'm still Yusaf Mack."
Mack says he and his former fiance are still friends, and his other children are supporting him.

The fight for equal rights turned physical in a Philadelphia barber shop earlier this week when openly gay boxer Yusaf Mack decided to stand up to a man who had been attacking him online.
Video of the incident, which occurred at the LA Clippers barber shop, shows Mack swinging at a man named Hector Echevarria who had been reportedly been posting comments about him which were derogatory and homophobic.
Hector is seen lying on the ground and cowering for cover, than at one point attempting to stand up, which Mack, 37, reacts to by slugging him in the face and sending him back to the floor.
At the end of the fight, which lasted approximately 30 seconds, Mack grabs a jar full of barber's tools and smashes them on Hector's head.
Comes out swinging: Yusef Mack beat Hector Echevarria (above)after the man repeatedly made homophobic comments about the openly gay boxer online
Fighting back: He then pummeled Hector with punches until he was cowering on the ground and his face bloody
Some close to the victim wrote on social media that he may have broken his ankle during the fight against Mack, a retired boxer who was outed because of his second career as an adult actor in gay films.
Photos from after the incident show Hector sitting on the floor with an orange towel covering his head and multiple cuts on his face.
He was also complaining about pain in his leg.
The fight did little to stop his attacks on Mack however, and he was posting on social media once again shortly after the fight, which took place last week.
'I rather have a video of some beating me up then a video of someone seeing me take a d*** up my a** any day,' wrote Hector.
He also stated that he and Mack would fight again, seemingly undaunted by the result in their first meeting.
That was followed by more homophobic messages and comments on his Facebook page, which he then made private.
Mack meanwhile has been keeping a low profile, and it is unclear if police plan on pressing charges in the incident.
One person who was present at the fight and appeared to have no connection to either man stated that Hector's head was actually in the sink when the fight began, and was surprised by the sneak attack.
Hector has been busy hiding his comments across social media, also making his twitter account private on Monday.
Mack meanwhile has said he has no issue taking on Hector in a rematch of the fight, which was first reported by TMZ .
The father-of-10 came out after first lying in an interview and claiming to have been drugged and raped when someone identified him as an actor in the adult film.
He claimed that he remembered nothing from the night he made the film, which features him having sex with two men, and woke up on a train with $4,500 and no idea where he had been.
The champ: Hector made his social media accounts private, but did write after the fight he would rather have that on film than getting a 'd*** up my a**' (Mack above in 2012)
Changes: Mack was a newly engaged father of ten when he came out as gay in 2015 after being spotted in an same-sex adult film (above)
The porn company threatened to sue after he made that claim, and he soon backtracked on his statement with an apology.
'This is an issued public apology from my heart. I want to address a few situations with the first being the false claims I made about being drugged during the (DawgPoundUSA.com) film,' said Mack.
'I have never spoke negatively about the company that produced the film although the claim to have been given a drug by someone during set was a lie.
'I was completely aware and fully conscious during the film.'
He also apologized to his fiancee at the time, who he split with after coming out, and his children.
