A few notes on what I'm looking for:

1) RPGs where yuri / lesbian / WLW relationships are a prominent aspect of the story.
2) Optional subplots with romanceable NPCs (e.g. Mass Effect) are not really what I'm looking for. Queerbaiting (Neptunia) doesn't count either.
3) I'm specifically looking for RPGs, not visual novels.
4) I realize this is quite a niche I'm looking in, so I'm not too picky about subgenres, engines, or art styles. Hit me with what you got.

I'll start us off with one that I finished recently, Luxaren Allure. This is a free, mostly upbeat, 20-ish hour JRPG that is stuffed with adorable yuri content from the very first scene. Mechanics aren't extremely complex, but there's enough to engage with, and the highest difficulty setting offers a decent challenge. The developers put a lot of effort into this game considering it's free, and I really enjoyed my time with it.

IIRC, isn't that just one of those "undertones" type yuri where the writers try to make it ambiguous? I've seen too many of these in order to avoid offending the male otaku who want to make these girls their waifu.

Eien no Filena. It's a pretty decent Super Famicom RPG with a fan translation that fits your criteria.

Well, Life Is Strange: Before The Storm does have RPG elements in it.

No, there aren't any relevant male characters. The relationships are important to the plot.

Nights of Azure 1 is really the only good one I can think of. 2 sucks.

What I mean is, does NoA merely tease the romance to make them seem more available to otaku? That's usually the intention.

No kissing, no outright confession, no explicit signs of affection towards each other. Nothing that couldn't just be seen as close friendship. See: Love Live

Imma throw an anti-rec to Nights of Azure, at least the first game.

Despite it being a type of game that requires you to basically get naked to level up and having all sorts of stupid character designs, it is pathetically chaste when it comes to the "romance" angle.

Also the game just kinda sucks in general too.

OP, do you only want Japanese made sapphic content?

Persona 3

Yuri Lowenthal did a good job voicing the MC

Even my GF, who has a much higher tolerance than me for skeevy shit than me, couldn't get through those games due to how poorly designed they are.

This is the first time I've ever read that word.

If you're not part of the sapphic community, it's hard to properly define its modern usage, but it is very much used amongst lesbians, bi/pan women, and non-binary people that love women.

No, not at all. I chose the term yuri for the title for brevity, but I'm open to any origin or aesthetic.

I'd almost want to throw Final Fantasy XIII into the ring but that might be a bit too ambiguous.

Damn. I actually came to this thread to recommend Luxaren Allure. First and pretty much only one that comes to mind.

it takes fucking forever for Fang to join the fray. Also Vanille is a horrible, grating character and Fang deserves better than her and the game she was constructed in.
Despite being someone who has actively looked for this same kind of thing in the past, I don't think I can name one that even fits your criteria. There are those with optional relationships and subplots like a lot of Bioware RPGs and the new Fire Emblem, but none where a lesbian romance is featured and important to the story. There's some visual novels I can name, but not RPGs.

Also I've been suckered into playing RPGs like Neptunia and Nights of Azure due to me being forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel because there's almost nothing else, and I've largely regretted my experience. Games like those had me walking away feeling like they treated yuri as if it were a fetish.

I've never used itch.io, but this one looks really cool :3

I'll throw another small one out there: Knight Bewitched. This one's OK, and can be finished in 8-10 hours. My main criticism here is that despite being the stated premise of the game, the relationship between Gwen and Ruth isn't developed very well. It's cute, but it really needed to be fleshed out better, with more dialogue and a few more scenes. Their best scene together is actually optional and easy to miss. To be fair, I can make this same criticism about most romances in media. They're almost always rushed, some just moreso than others.

I guess there's a direct sequel on the way that follows the same characters, so maybe that one will improve on the flaws? There are also two other games set in the same world that center around a faerie and her partner, but I haven't played them.

It's a shame, too. I've only played Rebirth 1, but there could have been a great arc between IF and Vert, if the developers had made the effort. How does the relationship between a regal CPU and a starstruck mortal - and between a reclusive shutin and a cheerful adventurer - evolve from mutual infatuation to deeper love? I would have loved to see that, but that's not the kind of game they wanted to make, I guess.

Also I wanted to ask...that avatar of yours is from Labryinth of Refrain, right? The game caught my eye before, but while I heard that the MC is shown to be in a relationship with another women, it ends as if someone read a list of all the bad, tragic lesbian tropes and decided to implement them all. I also heard that there's bad endings that imply rape which is a no go for me. The dungeon crawler aspect looked cool, but I'm not sure I could look past content like that, especially if some of it is hard or impossible to avoid.

With that in mind, would you still recommend it or is it an easy pass (given my concerns)?

OP did you ever play Embric of Wulfhammer's castle?

Surprisingly great little largely comedy game. Quite old. Weirdly enthralling. kind of annoying true end, but them's the breaks

I haven't looked at it in probably a full decade, so honestly it might kinda suck, but I have very fond memories.
Shadow Hearts and Tales of Vesperia

Yeah, while there's a lot of yuri-bait in those games, it's never made to be more than that. I only played Rebirth 1 and like the first 10 hours of Rebirth 2 before I eventually got fed up with it.

It's not coming out until next year *fingers crossed* but you'll definitely want Christine Love's newest game on your radar. https://store.steampowered.com/app/938860/Get_In_The_Car_Loser/

Thanks for those write-ups on Labyrinth of Refrain. Even though the gameplay seems right up my alley, I think I'm going to pass on it. I hear conflicting reports on how well those dark themes are incorporated, but even if they were handled tastefully, the fact that those elements have to be attached to the only JRPG that features a canonically queer female protagonist I could think of kind of depresses me.

ˈsafik and it's derived from Sappho .

Idk if anyone already recommended Shadow Hearts, but 1 & 2 are excellent RPG's featuring a main character named Yuri, bye.

I was interested in Labyrinth of Refrain until I read how (probably needlessly) dark it is. :|

After bringing you a list of the top 10 yaoi games you can play in English , it’s only fair to bring you the top 10 English yuri games! As before, some of these games contain mature content, but there are some lighter games on this list too.
Ichigo dreams of owning and running her own bakery, but her parents don’t approve of her ambitions. Determined to prove she’s serious, Ichigo moves out to make her own way in the world. She lands a job at the Sugar’s Delight bakery, owned by the attractive and outgoing Chocoa, who becomes Ichigo’s mentor in business and more…
Sugar’s Delight is a short game, and there aren’t any decisions to be made to change the plot. Still, if you like cake and you like hardcore yuri, then you should check it out. It’s an original English visual novel, and is available free for PC and mobile devices.
A Kiss for the Petals , also called Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o or SonoHana , is a well-known yuri series that follows the relationships between different girls at St. Michael’s Academy. The only game in the series officially released in English is Remembering How We Met , which is one of the later games in the franchise.
Some of the charm may be lost on those not familiar with the other games involving its central couple, Risa and Miya, but Remembering How We Met is a prequel, so it still makes sense on its own. Besides, it’s a cute story and enough to pique your interest in the the rest of the series. Hopefully, we’ll see some more of the games released in English following its success. If you have discs for other games, however, there are some English patches floating around. A Kiss for the Petals – Remembering How We Met is available for purchase on Steam.
Dahlia is a lesser-known yuri game, but it deserves a mention. It has a unique setting, taking place in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Émilie La Fontaine is a wealthy young girl who has lost everything. Torn from her parents and her home, she does all she can to survive, while hoping to be reunited with her family. This leads her to a mysterious mansion, where she finds shelter and companionship from the enchanting Dahlia Louissier. Will their love be enough to see them through in a time of hardship?
Dahlia ‘s historical backdrop is a breath of fresh air, and means there are some pretty character designs too! Dahlia can be purchased from the Kawa Soft website – at a very reasonable price!
Lonely Yuri is a very short little visual novel about the relationship between schoolgirls Fusa and Seri. Seri is a shut-in who has stopped attending school, and Fusa is asked by a teacher to drop by and give her some handouts. After being invited inside Seri’s apartment, however, Fusa falls asleep and is woken up with a kiss! The rest of the game follows the development of this short but sweet love story.
There isn’t much music, and there aren’t many CGs, – it really is quite a stripped back, simple game. However, Lonely Yuri ‘s cute art style and well-written and likable couple make it a title worthy of a place on the list.
The discovery of an old journal belonging to a gold rush miner sparks a race to find the treasure. Mourning her grandfather’s death, Amber has no knowledge of it, and sets out on the road to attend a music festival they had planned to go to together. She picks up the stranded Marina and ends up being pulled into the adventure herself.
Highway Blossoms is a story of two lost individuals who find strength in each other during their time on the road. There is only one love interest, and no choices to make – just pure emotional and engaging story. There’s also ‘EZ mode’ available once you’ve completed the story is a minute-long rundown of the game, which is amusing. Highway Blossoms is available for purchase on Steam.
Sacrament of the Zodiac takes place in a all-girls school with special rituals. One of these is the Sacrament, where girls pray to the Goddess and get baptised. If a girl manifests on of the twelve zodiac stigmata during this process, it is rumoured that she will bring happiness all. Arissa has developed the stigma of Aries, so she is declared the Princess of the White Sheep. Aloof transfer student Hitsuji stumbles upon Arissa in the church and confesses her love
