Alright, I'm going to be the buzz kill here and be honest. Yu-Gi-Oh GX primarily gains a positive rep due to nostalgia from those who saw the show when younger, but that does not excuse how this series pales immensely against its predecessor. I will note that I will be speaking from the perspective of one who has only watched the Dub and not the Sub or Manga. Yu-Gi-Oh GX is a show which follows Jaden Yuki (Dub) through his numerous misadventures in Duel Academy as he struggles to maintain his grades, battles to be #1 at the academy, and as dark forces begin arising once more. As the show goes on, Jaden, along with his numerous companions, face duel after duel for various stakes ranging from expulsion to cosmic domination. Unfortunately, the show bears a remarkable lack of care for world building, character development, story, and most importantly: dueling. Starting with world building, there's a remarkable lack of additions to the Yu-Gi-Oh universe as (mostly) everything takes place in Duel Academy. Old characters are gone, save for the occasional cameo, and very little information is expunged regarding the characters we grew up with in the original show. While old characters are left to bite the dust, the new characters added have no set up, no connections, and very few character qualities that are memorable. Beginning with the protagonist, Jaden Yuki, we have the typical anime protagonist that's happy-go-lucky, does everything because he likes dueling, and is generally oblivious to anything that doesn't pertain to dueling. While he does gain a few serious moments, they are events which are left behind and forgotten as if they had never happened as he goes back to his normal persona while spouting cheesy one-liners along with the other lines that make me cringe while watching. In addition, you have typical female companion that does nothing, best pal, "rival", and the muscle head. Of all the characters in the show, only the "best pal", known as Syrus Truesdale, bears qualities that are remotely relatable as he struggles to find his own way out of the shadow of his older brother. Moving on to the story... oh boy... where to begin. Yu-Gi-Oh GX bears very little identity of its own until much later in the show, and even then it all feels slapped together. In the first season, Jaden begins his life at school as a first year until everything starts getting crazy. The first season is extremely sloppy as numerous gaps of time are left out. I imagine that these are less jarring in an episode-a-week format, but to go from "We just arrived at Duel Academy!" to "IT'S EXAM TIME TO JUMP UP TO THE NEXT RANK!!!" is extremely jarring. The show feels as though it's all filler. It goes from one random story to the next with little set up, almost as if someone was fishing for what the next "interesting thing" was as they were writing it. As a cost, everything comes out of nowhere and various plot points are swept under a rug to be forgotten. As the first season continues, numerous events, which can best be described as paranormal and downright "what the actual hell?", transpire in which the top students of Duel Academy are required to duel powerful duelists to protect keys which unlock a malevolent power locked in the school. As the students begin to drop one by one, Jaden is left as the sole force to stand against it all. Big shock to no one: Jaden wins. Season two actually begins becoming more interesting as a story is actually set up from start to finish here! Despite this, there are still vital pieces in this arc that are given little to no set up, once again, as McGuffins appear left and right. As the dorm of Jaden and Co. is threatened with demolition, a cult with ill intentions comes to the school with ambitious plans to dominate the world. Armed with incredible abilities, only Jaden has a chance against them! Are you seeing a pattern yet? From here, the stories told are more fleshed out and bear a level of forethought in them; however the first two seasons are quite a journey to force yourself to watch. Finally we get to the duels! If you're coming in after watching the original, then you will be disappointed. Unlike Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, GX primarily revolves around Jaden and around his deck that, while more viable, is the exact same and revolves around the exact same strategies. Additionally, the duels are quite short and bear few moments in which something interesting occurs. Amusingly, the most interesting decks belong to just about every other character and those are extremely scarce. Whereas in Duel Monsters, you had various members all contributing to a goal and dueling, you now follow one duelist who pretty much always wins because the writers made it that way. I must confess that my main gripe is that these duels revolve more around the cards as opposed to the personalities of the characters. Marik was all about toying with his opponents and wearing them down, Pegasus was all about playing mind games and seeing your cards, Bakura was just freaky, etc. Their decks were built around them, not the other way around like it is here in GX. All in all, GX is barely okay as an anime. While it incorporated elements which resemble Duel Monsters, it largely is a nightmare of writing with all of its early errors and less than stellar character interactions. These characters never evolve as the characters you meet are the same throughout (except Syrus) despite all the traumatic events which transpire; though, the characters rarely receive the spotlight they deserve in most cases. I do not give brownie points for a product that eventually becomes good. I can forgive the occasional episode or mini-arc that falls short since the next episodes would make up for it, but a show that takes two seasons to stand up to be okay is disappointing and gives little to no reason for someone to keep watching. I had hopes when I had watched this anime as a kid, and they all were shattered as I got a (lack of a) story that I never asked for with characters that I could care less about. After the... interesting end at the finale of Duel Monsters, I had hoped for a satisfying conclusion to that saga only to have GX slap me in the face to "get my game on". If you loved this anime as a kid and still do, then more power to you; but as for me this show is a mockery that spit in my face until Dark Side of Dimensions gave me the resolution that I had always wanted.

So basically when school's out the world is completely free of risking its fate on a duel. Dueling is also just a one on one interaction so anyone not in the arena of the duel is completely oblivious of the fact that the world is in constant threat of being complete destroyed every school. That along with the Barnie the dinosaur-esk archetype this show is difficult to get through at times. Its better to just search for the japanese version.

Why are there only 3 seasons? The show had 4 total. Where is season 4 that gives the final piece with the series finale?

Honestly, while original yugioh dub has decent voice acting but cringey dialogue. Gx dub has both cringey dialogue and terrible voice acting. The censorship completely ruins character development, plot details, character motivations, and internal conflicts. Characters are made one-dimensional and gimmicky. If you want to see the true vision the writers had for this show, watch the original Japanese version.

yugioh gx is great but some people are complaining about that there is no season 4 on here well obviously its not since it was never dubbed and people also complaining about the censorship need to remember that the show is meant for kids not for a 20 year old living in there parents basement that has nothing better to do but complain about a kids anime

I've watched this the yugioh series from 1-3 in my childhood. I Love these shows! I just wish that the other episodes were on there. There are four season.
