Condoms and lube are not the only things you need by your bedside — consider adding your inhaler, too.
Intense sex sessions can trigger dangerous asthma attacks, according to a new study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
Hanky-panky is considered a strenuous exercise that requires a lot of energy, especially if you’re asthmatic.
“Many people don’t realize that the energy expenditure of sexual activity is about equivalent to walking up two flights of stairs,” said Dr. Ariel Leung, the study’s author.
Exercise has always been a risk for people with asthma due to the heavy breathing that inflames and swells the airways , causing the breathing tubes to narrow.
Sexually active asthmatics can suffer from “post-coital asthma exacerbations” if things get a little too rowdy under the sheets, according to the study .
However, when getting physically intimate, most people do not realize the symptoms of an asthma attack.
Some triggers include pollen, allergies, smoke, mold and exercise.
Leung urged people to be aware of the signs.
“When sexual activity-induced asthma is properly identified and treated, allergists are better able to improve their patient’s quality of life,” he said.
Using your inhaler 30 minutes prior to sex can prevent an asthma attack, allowing you and your partner to keep the party going.

It must have been about four weeks after my second child was born, but then we'd had two babies in 21 months, so my brain and body were not quite my own.
My husband Doug had just got in from work, I was stirring something on the hob and he'd collapsed in a small armchair in the corner of the kitchen.
I was bone-tired having battled through bath and bedtime — my hair in a greasy bun, my jogging bottoms well past their best (I'm not sure jogging bottoms have a 'best', but think saggy and long overdue a wash) and most likely hadn't yet managed to clean my teeth.
The days felt long, but with so much to do that I would regularly run my tongue around my mouth at 5pm and realise that even this basic task — one I'd managed every morning for the previous 30-plus years without thinking — had slipped my mind.
Feeling hot, I was not. I imagine my day had consisted of breastfeeding, feeding some more, negotiating with an almost two-year-old while feeling guilty that the new baby had robbed me and him of time together, and then feeling guilty that said newborn had been parked in her bouncer in a corner so the toddler wouldn't sit on her.
Doug, meanwhile, stroked the arms of the chair suggestively and raised an eyebrow, bravely (and naively) suggesting we might 'use' it for something other than sitting on. If he thought this was an acceptable come on, the dead-eyed stare he received in return told him otherwise.
Steph Douglas (pictured with her husband) shares thoughts on recent The Journal of Sexual Medicine study
I turned, walked out of the door and had a little cry at what very different places we were in. He was most definitely not reading the room. This was before we started a business, had a third baby and the hope was well and truly knocked out of his libido.
So I snorted when a study in The Journal of Sexual Medicine concluded recently that if new mothers had orgasms from the first month after birth, it could help their muscles recover more quickly.
The research suggests that regular climaxes (whether with a partner or solo) in the postpartum period may strengthen the pelvic floor even more than traditional Kegel exercises, which involve repeatedly tensing and relaxing muscles surrounding the bladder, bottom and vagina.
Women with weak pelvic floors can suffer from urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and reduced sexual satisfaction, so any proposed solution to these problems is most definitely welcome. And who doesn't love a good orgasm? Plus, they're free, which is never more appreciated than in an economic crisis. The theory is sound.
But as the mother of three children now aged four, ten and 11, had someone suggested I should add regular orgasms into my postnatal recovery as I stood before them crippled by exhaustion, at least two leaking orifices and new-mum anxiety about what a terrible job I was doing, I would have wondered if I was being pranked.
It's like when you go to the GP for your six-week check-up after giving birth and they ask what form of contraception you are using. Er, abstinence?
The study of first-time mums by academics at Shripad Hegde Kadave Institute of Medical Sciences in India states its orgasm regime could 'revolutionise postpartum pelvic floor training in women, as it can be practised at home with ease'.
I'm not sure if the brains behind this research have very small children, but nothing about finding time to have sex in the first six months after they're born (the period of this study) involves 'ease'.
Doug and I met in 2006 when we were 25 and 26, were engaged after nine months and married in 2008.
After the lustful first few months where we'd struggle to leave the house without falling back into bed — often waking in the night just to do it again (can you imagine?) — we'd settled in to a lovely, regular pattern where sex could happen at almost any time of the day if the mood struck.
The contrast between then and after our son was born in 2010 — when time was no longer our own — was stark.
I think we got back in the saddle within eight weeks of having our firstborn (it was at least another month or two for the subsequent two), but I'd had a straightforward birth and wanted to check it all still worked as much as anything.
We shouldn't forget the women who have experienced any difficulty or damage during labour — some need stitches due to tearing or incisions, which can take up to 12 weeks to heal — with a resulting fear around sex. This orgasm prescription definitely excludes them.
The first time after having a baby isn't likely to be mind-blowingly orgasmic for anyone, more likely something entered into with nervous trepidation and the concern of 'can we even still do this?' And the frequency after that is likely to be … well, intermittent.
Steph with her youngest son Frank as a newborn. She candidly opens up about her own experiences with post-birth stresses
At night, Doug and I would fall into bed exhausted. The baby needed feeding through the night and in the morning, the little one would inevitably wake up before us. The likelihood of the stars aligning for us to have time alone, without fear of interruption, and to both be in the mood was simply slim to none for a while.
If we did manage to get down to it, a wail from the baby would quickly ensure that getting to the climactic point required by this study was even more of a challenge.
You can, of course, take matters into your own hands, as the study suggests. But it wasn't just my husband's godawful timing that was putting me off my sexual stride.
I honestly don't think sex has been further from my mind than in those overwhelming early months after each baby.
And that's before you add the simmering resentment I felt towards Doug as he seemingly got to carry on with his old life while mine felt very, very different.
If I had time to myself, I was more desperate to switch off and sleep than to even think about feeling turned on.
When I asked Doug for his own memories of these periods, he says he realises now that he failed to appreciate the frame of mind needed for me to relax enough to have sex, whereas he felt he could (in his words) 'rise to it at any time'. But then his body and mind hadn't just taken a battering.
So let's crunch the numbers; exactly how many orgasms would even be required to have a significant effect on your pelvic floor?
In the study, 55 brand new mums were split into two groups, with the first being prescribed daily pelvic floor exercises and the second partaking in these exercises and additional 'sexual activity-induced orgasms'.
The strength of their pelvic floor function was measured every month. The women in group two, who boasted superior pelvic floor muscles, climaxed an average of 54 times in six months — that's just over two orgasms a week. Whether that's on your own or with your partner, those are ambitious numbers.
I know people who have gone the whole first year after having a baby without having sex at all — and even after that it's pretty sporadic.
Whatever the reported average regularity of sex in couples is (it's worth noting the women in group one averaged seven orgasms each in that entire time), I would at least halve it in reality. And don't forget that not all those occasions will necessarily end in orgasm.
So are new mums being asked to add yet another unachievable task to their list?
Dr Karen Gurney is a clinical psychologist specialising in sex, known as The Sex Doctor on Instagram. The frank conversation she had with me about sex in long-term relationships on my podcast, Don't Buy Her Flowers, is the most downloaded episode by far — double that of the next most popular episode.
And that is because she is so reassuring that, despite what we're led to believe, women may not experience spontaneous sexual desire once we're beyond those early flushes of a new relationship.
In her book, Mind The Gap, Dr Karen says that sexual satisfaction is at its lowest for couples with children under five.
On that note, she also reports that 'studies have found that the more equitable the division of household tasks in relationships, the greater the relationship and sexual satisfaction the couple usually report'.
The impact of the mental load that women often shoulder should not be underestimated.
The myriad things that might run through a new mum's brain regardless of whether she's standing in the queue at the Post Office or in a carnal embrace with her partner have an impact on both frequency of sex and whether that sex results in an orgasm.
We're more likely to get turned on when we feel connected to a partner, our minds are clear of to-do lists and we are relaxed.
I can confirm that seeing my husband put a wash on or laying out the kids' uniform the night before school — crucially, without me asking him to — will get me going more than an evening at male strip show Magic Mike, even if original star Channing Tatum were fronting the troupe.
If we want women to have more orgasms, then we could start with having more open conversations about our bodies, sex and relationships and work towards greater equality at home so we can find the time, headspace and enthusiasm to have them.
Now that feels like a more realistic solution.
